Kevin Smith Explains How [SPOILER] Survived Masters of the Universe's First Episode

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation - Part 1, now streaming on Netflix.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation's shocking final reveal was foreshadowed early on, according to showrunner Kevin Smith.

During a Q&A for Revelations on Netflix Geeked's Twitter, Smith revealed the moment when Skeletor managed to cheat death in the premiere episode before he and Prince Adam were caught in a magical explosion. "We thought him and He-Man died in the final battle. He-Man, we know, died. He went up to Preternia. And Skeletor, no sign of him there, but also no sign of him, as you saw, in Subternia either. So he stayed alive by casting his essence into Evil-Lyn's wand-staff at the final second before everything went kablooey. And so there, he'd been with them on the whole journey."

Smith also highlighted how Revelation's animators used scenes "where Lyn would look at her wand-staff" to indicate Skeletor's nearby presence. Those shots would be followed by a close-up of the wand's orb with a high-pitched ringing sound, which, according to him, "was meant to be Skeletor."

In the mid-season finale of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Adam, who had been living in Preternia since his death, chose to return with Teela, Evil-Lyn and their allies to Eternia alongside the newly-reforged Sword of Power, despite knowing he wouldn't be able to return afterwards. However, before he could fully restore Eternia's magic with the sword, Skeletor reappeared and stabbed Adam, leaving him heavily wounded and losing his weapon in the process. This allowed Skeletor to use the Power of Greyskull to make himself godlike and giant-sized, with Smith teasing that he will be renamed "Skelegod" when the show returns to Netflix.

Released as a continuation of the classic 1980s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, Revelation has since divided critics and viewers for its narrative decisions. The show currently holds a high 95% Fresh critic score on Rotten Tomatoes but Audience ratings for Revelation were review-bombed to a Rotten 36%, mostly due to He-Man's sacrifice and absence from the show so far in favor of Teela and the supporting cast.

Executive produced by Kevin Smith, the first five episodes of Masters of the Universe: Revelation are now available on Netflix.
