Loki and Sylvie's Final Fight Was Inspired by Mr. & Mrs. Smith

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 6, "For All Time. Always.," streaming now on Disney+.

The final fight between Loki and Sylvie during the Loki season finale was inspired by Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

"I'm casting myself as Angelina, obviously," said actor Sophia Di Martino in an interview with Vanity Fair. The fight in question occurs during Loki Episode 6, "For All Time. Always." when Di Martino's Sylvie moves to kill He Who Remains, before being stopped by Loki, who pleads with her to consider the outcome of her actions. What follows is an emotional fight between the two Variants, which Di Martino says was inspired by the passionate, violent brawl between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The fight between Loki and Sylvie, however, ends with a kiss and Sylvie's betrayal.

"I see it sort of like, 'it's been fun but see you later,' goodbye kiss," Di Martino said. "It also helps her spin him around so she can get [the TemPad]. But I don't think it's a totally cold move. Maybe pushing him through the time door is a way to get him out of the way, but also to keep him safe."

While the kiss may have been a brief moment of intimacy for the two Lokis, it was also full of tension, as Sylvie used the kiss to grab the TemPad on He Who Remains' desk and shove Loki through a doorway back to the TVA. Loki director Kate Herron previously expressed that despite Sylvie's deception, it was important that the kiss not feel disingenuous.

"Emotionally, from Sylvie's perspective, I think it's a goodbye," Herron said. "But it's still a buildup of all these feelings. They've both grown through each other over the last few episodes. It was important to me that it didn't feel like a trick, like she was deceiving him. She is obviously doing that, on one hand, but I don't feel the kiss is any less genuine. I think she's in a bad place, but her feelings are true."

In another interview, Herron made a similar statement, saying that Sylvie's actions in the finale don't reflect her feelings towards Loki. "Sylvie is sort of where our Loki was in Thor," Herron said. "She's driven by revenge, pain, and anger, and that's what [Loki is] saying to her. He’s like, 'I've been where you are, and I just want you to be OK. You're not going to get what you want.'"

Herron continued, "So there was a sense that she was turning to get the TemPad, but I don't think it meant the kiss wasn't genuine. In my head, it was always a horrible goodbye, really, but the feelings were real."

Loki and Sylvie's kiss, along with the entirety of Loki Season 1, is currently streaming on Disney+.
