J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is one of those things that never seems to go out of style, even though the film adaptations have been out for over a decade. But the content and extensive lore of Middle-earth keeps fans engaged far beyond the films. There's so much detail in the history of Middle-earth and, when looking into the original books, there is much that is left unsaid in the adaptations, which leaves a lot to be discovered for fans who have only seen the movies.
This is why the internet is filled with new fan theories, discoveries and questions about the Lord of the Rings universe to this day. In fact, one fan theory posted on Reddit by user applecub is sparking interest because it seems pretty contentious. The user theorizes that Frodo doesn't even know Legolas' name, despite them meeting in The Fellowship of the Ring.
When the Fellowship was formed in Rivendell, Legolas was fairly quiet during the discussion, which is normal to his introverted character. Though Frodo may have been introduced to Legolas, the content of that fateful meeting would understandably override any other information. The most important member of the fellowship, besides his Hobbit companions, would have been Aragorn, or, as Frodo knew him at the time, Strider. Aragorn had helped Frodo survive the Ringwraith's attack and led them most of the way to Rivendell, but Legolas was a new person in Frodo's life.
It also doesn't help that after the skirmish at Amon Hen, when Boromir died, Frodo and Sam separated themselves from the rest of the fellowship so that they could make their way to Mordor. This means that Frodo really didn't spend all that much time with Legolas in the first place. So, when the Reddit theory brings up the fellowship reunion towards the end of The Return of the King, when they all reconvene in Rivendell, it's clear that Frodo doesn't say Legolas' name. When Gimli walks through the door, Frodo says his name with glee. Legolas follows Gimli into the room, and Frodo smiles but his mouth hangs open slightly -- almost as if he has forgotten his name.
After months of being separated from the fellowship, it would make sense that Frodo would forget Legolas' name. Their introduction was brief and overwhelmed by the daunting task at hand, so while Frodo may have once known his name, the months between their reunion would have made him forget. Furthermore, during their reunion in Rivendell, it would be incredibly awkward for Frodo to ask for his name, which is what the fan theory suggests.
Whether Frodo actually knows Legolas' name is up for debate, as fans don't actually hear Frodo say his name many times in the film trilogy. But this fan theory clearly holds some water, with it being entirely possible that, even if Frodo did know his name, he absolutely forgot it, through no fault of his own. Frodo was burdened with an important purpose, so trivial information like an Elf's name could've easily slipped his mind.
