Netflix has released the first trailer for Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild, a brand new CG animated movie.
Legends of the Guild is set in the world of Capcom's extremely popular Monster Hunter series of video games. The animated film is being produced by Pure Imagination Studios, who previously animated shorts for LEGO and also worked with Netflix on the Army of the Dead: Viva Las Vengeance virtual reality experience. The movie is directed by Steven F. Yamamoto and was written by Joshua Fine, who previously worked on the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.
The movie tells the story of Aiden, a young boy who decides to become a professional hunter and join a hunting party after his home village is destroyed by an Elder Dragon. Aiden eventually grows up to be one of the supporting characters seen in Monster Hunter 4 and Monster Hunter World, and Legends of the Guild details how he got his start. The movie will feature appearances from many of the iconic monsters (and the weapons and armor made from them,) from the game series.
Monster Hunter began in 2004 with the release of the first game in the series for the Playstation 2. While the original game wasn't a massive hit, the series slowly built-up a cult following until it became a bona-fide phenomenon when games such as Monster Hunter Freedom and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite were released for the PSP several years later. The series' popularity has continued with modern releases such as Monster Hunter Rise, which was released for the Nintendo Switch in March and has already sold 7 million copies. The latest game in the series, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, is a spinoff that trades the series' trademark action-RPG combat for more traditional, turn-based JRPG gameplay, and was released on July 9.
Legends of the Guild is the second movie to be based off of the Capcom games; the first, a live-action adaptation by Resident Evil and Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson, was released in 2020 to mixed reviews. The movie starred The Fifth Element's Milla Jovavich and Ong-Bak martial artist Tony Jaa. Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild looks to be a more faithful adaptation of the games than Anderson's take on the series, which added modern day military weapons and soldiers to the series' colorful fantasy setting. Fans of Monster Hunter will find out if this was a hunt worth embarking on when the movie premieres on Netflix on Aug. 12.
