Best-selling life simulation video game Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive new content later this year following a lack of meaningful updates since January 2021.
Nintendo of America shared the news on Twitter alongside an announcement of the game's upcoming patch. The update, scheduled for July 29, will bring back weekly fireworks shows and seasonal summer items for the month of August. The fireworks previously appeared during 2020 as part of that year's Summer Update, which also added diving, dreaming and pirate-themed items gained by helping Gullivarrr. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has not received an update since March 2021, which added Sanrio-related items for those who successfully obtained the Sanrio Animal Crossing amiibo cards.
While New Horizons received a small content update in March, which added Super Mario items in order to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary, the game has not had a proper seasonal update since January 2021. Fans had previously speculated about the addition of pigeon barista Brewster or farming and cooking options, but the dry spell of new content has left players' expectations low.
"It would be nice if genuine new content was released for this game," wrote Twitter user @swagtastic326. "It's sad that a 3DS game has more content than a Switch game in 2021."
While players wait for new content, some have found new ways to have fun in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. One fan, named ACNH Disney Resort, recently recreated the "Zero to Hero" musical number from Disney's Hercules using items, outfits and characters from the game. "This has got to be the most challenging edit I've done so far," the description read. "I spent two months planning, creating all the backgrounds and items, filming at Harv's Island and then putting it all together. I thought this was going to be impossible to re-create, but I wanted to prove myself wrong. As Phil said to Hercules, 'Giving up is for rookies.'"
Developed and published by Nintendo, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
