What’s more, is that Pokémon can be either pure or dual-type, and there are 18 different types that a Pokémon can be. Not only that, but pure Dark-type Pokémon are few and far between and have various degrees of strength.

Poochyena is a Generation III Dark-type Pokémon that’s known for its ferocious bite. This Pokémon resembles a cute, small, grey canine that has an impeccable sense of smell and a propensity to bite anything that dares to get close enough. Poochyena was first introduced in the episode "Get the Show on the Road" in Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire.

Even though it is quite fierce, it is actually the weakest of all of the pure Dark-type Pokémon. Its total base stats equate to 220, which is incredibly low considering these stats are split across six different categories.

11 Nickit Is Cunning, Clever, And Has A Knack For Stealing Food

Nickit, the Fox Pokémon, is a Generation VIII Pokémon that was first introduced in "Settling the Scorbunny!" in Pokémon Journeys: The Series. Nickit is an orange fox-like Pokémon that, as its name suggests, is a cunning thief and enjoys stealing food.

Like Poochyena, Nickit's stats are quite low compared to the other Dark-type Pokémon. It has base stats that total only 245. This pure Dark-type Pokémon may not be the strongest, but it has many abilities and its clever mind to help it get out of sticky situations.

10 Purrloin Is A Mischievous Pokémon That Likes To Cause Trouble

Purrloin, the Devious Pokémon, is a pure Dark-type Pokémon that first appeared in "Purrloin: Sweet or Sneaky?" in Pokémon The Series: Black & White. Purrloin resembles a purple cat. It's mischievous and enjoys stealing from people. It also enjoys causing lots of trouble. In spite of this, it’s actually a somewhat strong, pure Dark-type Pokémon.

With total base stats of 281, Purrloin is a formidable Dark-type Pokémon. In addition to this, its hidden ability, Prankster, which increases the priority of status moves, is incredibly useful.

9 Alolan Meowth Is A Fiesty Feline Pokémon

Meowth, the Scratch Cat Pokémon, first appeared in"Pokémon Emergency!," the very second episode of the original Pokémon series. Meowth is a small, feline Pokémon that is attracted to shiny objects. The most popular Meowth in this series is a member of Team Rocket who's even capable of talking. The Alolan Meowth, however, is actually a Dark-type Pokémon.

This pure, Dark-type Pokémon has total base stats of 290 and can hold its own in many situations. Its hidden ability, Unnerve, is also very helpful as it makes foes nervous and unable to use berries.

8 Zorua’s Timid Nature Led To Its Incredible Illusion Abilities

Zorua, the Tricky Fox Pokémon, debuted in the Pokémon: Zoroark: Master of Illusions movie and was used by the main antagonist. Zorua is a grey fox Pokémon that is said to have a timid nature, which is what leads to its incredible illusion abilities.

When a Pokémon like Zorua switches into battle, it uses its Illusion ability to take the appearance of the Pokémon in the last place in the party. On top of this, Zorua has total base stats of 330 with its attack and speed stats rated the highest.

7 Persian From Alola Is One Classy Cat

Persian, or the Classy Cat Pokémon, is the evolved form of Meowth. It first appeared in "Battle Aboard the St. Anne," which is the 15th episode of the original Pokémon series, as Giovanni’s Pokémon. Giovanni is the leader of Team Rocket and was a former Viridian City Gym Leader.

What makes this Pokémon so interesting is that it’s the Alolan Persian that is purely dark. This Dark-type Persian first appeared in "That's What The Litten Is A Scamp!." The Alolan Persian is a large feline Pokémon with total base stats of 440, making it much stronger than Meowth, and its abilities make it a formidable opponent.

6 Mightyena Resembles A Hyena And Loves To Hunt In A Pack

Mightyena, or the Bite Pokémon, as its sometimes known, is a pure Dark-type Pokémon that has many characteristics of a hyena. So much so that it is actually known to work in packs to take down its prey. This Pokémon first appeared in "A Bite to Remember" from Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire.

With total base stats of 420 and its hidden ability, Moxie, Mightyena is incredibly strong. Paired with its incredible attack moves and TMs that it can learn, it is a strong Pokémon.

5 Liepard Is A Generation V Pokemon Known As The Cruel Pokémon

Liepard, or the Cruel Pokémon, is a Generation V Pokémon that resembles a purple feline with yellow rose petal spots. This Pokémon first appeared on TV in "Lost at the League!" from Pokémon the Series: Black and White.

It has total base stats of 446 and is well known for its ability to use the element of surprise while battling. It will often strike before the opponent can react. Liepard’s special ability also allows it to increase the priority of status moves, which can be super helpful. Its fast and strong attacks are what make this Pokémon so strong.

4 Absol Uses Its Horn To Detect And Predict Disasters

Absol is a Generation III pure, Dark-type Pokémon that is also known as the Disaster Pokémon. It is a fluffy mammalian Pokémon that can often be found in the mountains. With its horn, it’s able to detect changes in the land and sky and can predict when disasters will occur.

It also has a high total base stat of 465, with the majority focused on its attack power. What makes this Pokémon interesting is that its hidden ability, Justified, allows the Pokémon to gain attack power when hit with a Dark-type move.

3 Zoroark Is A Bipedal Fox-Like Pokémon Capable Of Creating Realistic Illusions

The Illusion Fox Pokémon, otherwise known as Zoroark, is a Generation V Pokémon and is the evolved form of Zorua. It is a bipedal brown and grey fox that can create such realistic illusions, that people are unable to tell them apart from reality.

With total base stats of 510 (mainly in speed and attack), its hidden ability of Illusion, and the moves that are available to Zoroark, it is a strong opponent. Add in the number of TMs that Zoroark can learn, it can become even stronger than it already is.

2 Umbreon Is A Dark-Type Pokemon And An Evolved Form Of Eevee

Umbreon is the evolved form of Eevee and evolves when it levels up with friendship during the night or with friendship and a Moon Shard. Umbreon is known as the Moonlight Pokémon that has a sleek black body and has markings meant to drive fear in other Pokémon.

It is also one of the strongest pure Dark-type Pokémon. Umbreon has total base stats of 525, with most of its abilities in defense and health, and an almost even split between attack, special attack, and speed.

1 Darkrai Lures People To Sleep And Scares Them With Nightmares

The Pitch Black Pokémon, Darkrai, is the strongest pure Dark-type Pokémon so far. It is a mythical Pokémon from Generation IV and it’s said that on a moonless night, the Pokémon would lure people to sleep and forces them to endure nightmares.

Being a mythical Pokémon, it's no wonder that it’s the strongest pure, Dark-type Pokémon. It has total base stats of 600, which is the highest among the pure Dark-types. With its powerful abilities and its stats, Darkrai is a fearsome Pokémon.
