Red Hood Adopts a New Identity in DC Future State | CBR

Jason Todd has sported a number of identities over the years, but in the bleak timeline of DC's Future State, he assumes a title signifying his service of the Magistrate: Peacekeeper Red.

DC's October 2021 solicitations confirm that Todd will be fully immersed in the Peacekeeper Red designation until the end of the Future State: Gotham miniseries. The series sees Jason undercover within the corrupt police state of Gotham, bringing in criminals under the guise of Peacekeeper Red and working to further infiltrate the oppressive system to assist a presumed dead Bruce Wayne.

  • ALL OUT WAR! Jason Todd, now known as PEACEKEEPER RED, must join forces with THE NEXT BATMAN to defeat the NEW supervillain WARMONGER. The only thing standing in their way is every cop and Peacekeeper inside Magistrate Headquarters!

Todd's most notable persona is that of the Red Hood, which he adopted after being revived from his tragic death as the second Robin under Bruce Wayne's Batman. The title was stolen from the villain responsible for his death, the Joker, who wore the hood before his transformation into the "Clown Prince of Crime". Todd has gone through a revolving door of titles though, many belonging to other Bat Family members such as Batman, Red Robin, and even Nightwing.

His new handle as a peacekeeper highlights his descent further into the Magistrate. The Peacekeepers are the soldiers and powerhouses of the system's response to the criminal (and vigilante) element. Bruce Wayne was seen doing battle with the leader Peacekeeper-01 in Future State: Dark Detective, who is also generating problems for the caped crusader in the current Batman series as well. The entire timeline of Future State is a possible end result of the actions of the modern continuity and where it could wind up.

In recent issues, Todd had been sent after the Next Batman, Jace Fox, and believed that the new vigilante may be a tool for the Magistrate after a bombing attack shook the city. The two initially squared off after an accidental encounter in Blackgate Prison, as Todd tried to arrest Fox and bring him in. However, the two quickly allied themselves once the inmates were released from their cells and had their sights set on the heroes.

In Future State: Gotham #3, the real attack was revealed to have been perpetrated by Warmonger, framing Fox in the process. The villain injected the two with a drug that would instill a bloodlust and force the two to combat each other again, but the unlikely dynamic duo now have no other reason to fight. The story of Todd as Peacekeeper Red has crossed the halfway mark, but there are three more issues until readers can find out if the new identity will persist onward like the name of "Red Hood," or if it will fade and fall onto the list of Todd's more forgettable personas.

Future State: Gotham #6 will be penned by Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver, with art by Giannis Milonogiannis. The main cover and variant cover will be illustrated by Simone Di Meo and Rose Besch, respectively. The final issue of the miniseries goes on sale on Oct. 12, 2021.
