Roswell, New Mexico showrunner Chris Hollier explained how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affected Season 3 of The CW series.
During the virtual Comic-Con@Home panel for Roswell, New Mexico, Hollier was asked about the carnival scene in the Season 2 finale and how the global pandemic affected the production and writing process of the series' third season. "For COVID, probably the two biggest things was like, there are no carnivals," Hollier said. "But the thing that it did do, which I thought was awesome, is it let us focus on the people that are here, that you're looking at. So like, it was harder to fly guest stars in because of COVID, like people sometimes were really afraid to get on the plane or we just couldn't get them because another show would lock them down. So, we all told each other this is like Shakespeare in the Park, these are the players and we're gonna lean into all the great talent that they have here."
Hollier also went on to explain how COVID impacted the romantic aspect of the show and how the writers began to treat the story like a romantic comedy. "The one other thing it did too, there were some questions about kissing," Hollier said. "So we looked at this like a romantic comedy. We talked a lot about One Fine Day in the room and like, holding off some of that romance and how we get it and where we get it from. So, I'd actually say there's a lot of romance going on, like people are really gonna dig that and we found creative ways to sort of keep that alive. It was a fun challenge. Or, it's fun now going through it. It sucked then. But these are a good bunch of people to be in that trench with."
Roswell, New Mexico is the television adaptation of author Melinda Metz's book series Roswell High and follows Liz Ortecho (played by Jeanine Mason) as she discovers aliens throughout her hometown of Roswell. While the book series, as well as The CW show's first two seasons, mostly took place in Roswell, New Mexico, the third season will introduce a new setting in Los Angeles, California as Liz starts her new career. It was also announced in 2020 that new cast member Steven Krueger would join the series in a recurring role as Liz's laboratory colleague, Heath.
It was announced Feb. 2021 that The CW officially renewed Roswell, New Mexico for a third season, along with Legacies, Charmed, All American, Dynasty, In the Dark, Nancy Drew and Riverdale. Other CW shows that were renewed include the network's DC-inspired shows, like The Flash, Batwoman and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
Season 3 of Roswell, New Mexico is currently airing on The CW with new episodes every Monday.
