A new trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings promotes the Marvel Studio film's Mortal Kombat-style tournament.
The Shang-Chi video opens with Simu Liu's titular hero facing off against an unknown opponent in an octagon. Awkwafina's Katy asks what happened to his shirt, leaving Shang-Chi to only reply with a shrug of his arms and shoulders. We then get to see the mysterious Ten Rings in action as Tony Leung's Wenwu/The Mandarin unleashes the rings' power against a large army of soldiers.
Some other new footage shown includes Shang-Chi battling someone on a streetcar with a lethal blade for an arm. At one point Shang-Chi leaps from one passenger car to another, as the villain is left spiraling in his wake. An impressive finale features Shang-Chi falling from the sky and landing with a golden glow of energy, with a set of rings circling him as he prepares to face his own father, the Mandarin.
The first full trailer for Shang-Chi surprised fans by reintroducing The Incredible Hulk villain Abomination to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Abomination was shown fighting a mystical opponent, who many speculated was Doctor Strange's ally Wong. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige later confirmed the Shang-Chi trailer showed Wong fighting Incredible Hulk's Abomination.
"When Shang-Chi was happening, I was so pleased that it was happening, but I was a little kind of crestfallen I wasn't a part of it," Benedict Wong said. "And then the call [from Marvel Studios] came. And I was like, 'Yes!'"
He also discussed the joy that came from working on a film with a primarily Asian and Asian American cast. "You know, I'm super thrilled," Wong said. "And then to be sat at a table of Asian excellence, it was amazing. And I'm a big fan of all of those artists. Tony Leung [who plays the villainous Wenwu] is a massive idol of mine. So it's been constant surprises, that's what [the role of Wong] gives me."
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings lands in theaters on Sept. 3.
