The CW's Arrowverse launched in 2012 with the hit series Arrow, before expanding to include a wide-roster of shows such as The Flash, Supergirl, and more. While the original show was fairly dark, with obvious influences from The Dark Knight trilogy, the later spin-offs would include a great deal more humor. Over time, even the hard-edged persona of Oliver Queen let a few one-liners out.
The numerous series' consisted of several naturally comedic actors who effortlessly brought a sense of fun and energy to the storylines, while gifted writers mined the depths of their comic knowledge to deliver jokes for die-hard and casual fans alike. Whether scripted or improvised, the Arrowverse gave viewers a lot of laugh-out-loud moments to endlessly quote.
10 "Quiet, The Marshmallows Are Talking"
Legends Of Tomorrow was easily the most comedic series of the bunch, with a wacky premise that lent itself to countless funny wisecracks. In the episode "Zari," team-member Nate tries to help his fellow Legend, Amaya, with an issue regarding her abilities. His solution is to use their ship's AI system to create a hallucinogen that may help.
Not to be left out, Nate also dabbles in the fun and has a hilarious reaction to the drug. As the team comes under attack, Nate has been rendered useless and only capable of blurting out nonsense such as "I like broccoli" in a very dramatic manner or the hilarious "Quiet, the marshmallows are talking."
9 "Is This Cosplay?"
2019s crossover, Crisis On Infinite Earths, saw not just the Arrowverse shows come together, but even characters and cast members from previous DC shows and movies. The storyline saw multiple realities crash together and be destroyed, requiring a huge roster of heroes and the occasional villain to unite. Many of the guest appearances were kept under wraps and none more so than a certain scarlet speedster from Zach Snyder's Justice League.
In the third episode of the event, the CW's own Flash, played by Grant Gustin, accidentally bumped into Ezra Miller's version of the character. As the two struggle to understand what's happening, Miller's Flash quickly assumes that Gustin is a fan in cosplay, and sweetly asks if he'd like a selfie.
8 "It Feels Really Good Having You Inside Me"
Felicity Smoak, portrayed by Emily Bett Rickards, was a light-hearted addition to the darker world of Arrow. In her early appearances, she would often ramble on and keep talking whenever she felt nervous and this led to numerous slip-ups that left audiences in stitches.
In the first season episode, "The Undertaking," Felicity goes undercover to help the team gain much-needed intel. While trying to remain cool, she communicates with Oliver through an earpiece and comes out with the doozy "It feels really good having you inside me." Her attempts to fix the mistake only made things more awkward.
7 "Are You Puffing Out Your Chest?"
Another crossover episode, this time from 2018s Elseworlds. Oliver and Barry discover that they have swapped bodies thanks to the reality-warping powers of John Deegan. Worse than that, nobody believes them when they try to explain the situation. This forces them to travel to an alternate Earth and track down Kara, AKA Supergirl, in the hopes that her world hasn't been affected.
The plan works and she recognizes the two for who they really are before introducing them to her famous cousin, Clark Kent, AKA Superman. Out of his comfort zone, Oliver tries to make himself look tougher in front of the man of steel, prompting Barry to ask "Are you puffing out your chest?" Oliver simply responds "Yes."
6 "Bunch Of Superheroes In A Farmhouse? Feel Like I've Seen That In A Movie Before"
In "Legends Of Yesterday," the cast of Arrow and Flash came together to protect new hero Hawkgirl from the villainous Vandal Savage. In their attempts to keep their ally safe, the two teams decide to take refuge in a farmhouse away from their respective cities.
As they arrive, Thea Queen remarks that the notion of a team of heroes hiding out in a farmhouse feels like something she saw in a movie once. To some, this moment would mean nothing. To most comic fans, however, it was an obvious and humorous nod to 2015's Avengers: Age Of Ultron which saw the Avengers rest at Hawkeye's secret family farm.
5 "You're Trying To Turn Me Into Spider-Man?"
The Marvel references wouldn't end there, and in fact, only greatly increased over the coming years. These jokes would often be used to highlight some obvious story similarities between the two universes, and another came in 2017s Crisis On Earth-X.
During the episode, Legends members Jax and Martin Stein search for a way to separate themselves and thus end their joint-alter ego of Firestorm. Stein attempts to ensure Jax will gain new powers that allow him to continue fighting with the team and devises a compound that will grant Jax spider-powers. The problem is, instead of exciting abilities such as a spider-sense or superstrength, Jax would likely only receive the ability to "stick to things."
4 "I Was Gonna Go With 'Oracle' But It's Taken"
In season 4 of Arrow, Felicity worked as full-time tech support for Oliver and the team and until then, she didn't have a unique codename like everyone else. During a mission, Oliver refers to Felicity as "Overwatch" as they speak via his headset.
Confused, she asks for clarification and Oliver states that it was about time she had her own codename. She loves the new title and he quickly states that his original idea was "Oracle," but it was already in use. This was a great nod to the as-yet-unseen Batman side of the Arrowverse and the character of Barbara Gordon.
3 "She Really Kinda Looks Like My Cousin"
Back to the annual crossovers and this great line was dropped in the closing moments of 2016s Invasion!. This storyline saw the cast of the 4 main shows all come together for the first time, and aside from Flash himself, no one else had encountered Supergirl before. Brandon Routh, who portrayed Superman in 2006s Superman Returns, joined the Legends series as Ray Palmer, AKA The Atom, and enjoyed fun interactions with the rest of the cast.
At this point, the Arrowverse had featured many stars from earlier DC adaptations but rarely referenced the matter. This time, Ray and Felicity would discuss her visual similarity to Kara after their victory, prompting the fantastic line from Ray "Yeah, you know what's funny? She really kinda looks like my cousin."
2 "How Can You Have Super Speed And Still Not Be On Time?
Even the very first crossover had to deliver a good line and this was courtesy of Oliver trying to train Barry for an upcoming battle. Up to this point, Barry was still finding his footing as the Central City speedster, and some of his super-heroics were less than graceful.
This irritated Oliver, and he wanted to teach Barry to use his speed to scope out potential dangers in an environment before rushing in. Barry disagreed and his first test ended in pain as he got caught off-guard by hidden crossbows. The test didn't start off well either, with Barry managing to run late to the meeting despite being the so-called fastest man alive.
1 "Beebo Want Cuddles"
Legends Of Tomorrow delivered its most bonkers moment in "The Good, The Bad And The Cuddly." In the episode, the Legends are battling the demon Mallus in the Wild West, and discover that the way to defeat him is to create something just as deadly with the help of powerful totems.
With the totems, they channel their energies to create a being of light and goodness to tackle this deadly evil. The plan works, and a powerful creature is formed to help our heroes—a giant blue teddy bear named Beebo. As the two battle it out, the team and bystanders look on in awe and bewilderment. As Mallus attempts to flee, Beebo leaps into the air and embraces the demon in its arms proclaiming "Beebo want cuddles" before flattening the villain into the ground in a massive, heart-shaped blue cloud of happiness.
