The Lamb Trailer Is the Creepiest Thing You'll See This Week

A24 dropped a decidedly creepy trailer for its upcoming horror film The Lamb.

The trailer revolves around María (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason), a childless couple who raise sheep on their farm in rural Iceland. One day, however, the pair make a starling discovery when one of their sheep gives birth and "soon face the consequences of defying the will of nature," as the film's synopsis puts it. Adding to the creepiness, the trailer juxtaposes the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" with footage of Maria and Ingvar as their story takes increasingly disturbing turns.

Co-written and directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson in his feature debut, The Lamb recently premiered to positive reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. IndieWire's Eric Kohn compared the film to A24's previous horror films, writing that Jóhannsson "has been schooled in the eloquent atmospheric horror of 'The Witch' and 'Hereditary' to such a precise degree that 'Lamb' may as well exist as a spin-off." In spite of its derivative elements, Kohn found The Lamb "audacious and eerie" thanks to its "batshit crazy" premise, advising others to go in knowing as little about the movie as possible.

Founded in 2012, A24 is an independent film company and distributor that has enjoyed great critical success with its releases, especially those of the horror and thriller variety. In addition to its collaborations with filmmakers like Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) and Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), A24 has distributed movies directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Alex Garland (Ex Machina), the Safdie Bros. (Uncut Gems) and Rose Glass (Saint Maud).

Up next, A24 will release The Green Knight, a re-imagining of the 14th century Arthurian legend starring Dev Patel as King Arthur's nephew Sir Gawain. Originally scheduled to open in 2020, The Green Knight was delayed to 2021 in response to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite losing its UK theatrical release for the time being, the film remains set to arrive in U.S. theaters on July 30.

The Lamb is slated to reach theaters on Oct. 8. Jóhannsson co-wrote the movie with Sjón, the Icelandic novelist, poet and playwright who also co-penned Eggers' upcoming Viking thriller The Northman.
