The Wheel of Time Boss Explains What the Cast’s Diverse Origins Bring to the Setting

The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins says the Amazon series' large and diverse cast is one of its greatest strengths.

In an interview with Comic-Con@Home, Judkins said he sees The Wheel of Time's diversity informing the show positively. "The Wheel of Time has always sat as the most diverse fantasy book that came out in its time. I think when you're adapting it to be on television today, we also need to do that in order to honor the books and make this the most diverse fantasy TV show that's been on television before," he said.

"That's something that's been really important to me the whole way through the process and bringing in all these people from the different parts of our world is letting us build the worlds within the show, too," Judkins continued. "It's exciting when you sit down to dinner with Alvaro Morte (Logain) from Spain and Priyanka Bose (Alanna) from India and Rosamund [Pike] (Moiraine) … everyone comes together in Prague and makes this thing more than it would be without them."

There are over three dozen cast members currently attached to the first season of the show, which has already been picked up for a second season. Seasoned actor Rosamund Pike will take the lead as the Aes Sedai Moiraine, while lesser-known actors such as Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford and Barney Harris make up part of the Two Rivers group of Rand, Perrin and Mat, respectively. Other names appearing in smaller roles include Hammed Animashaun as Loial the Ogier and Johann Myers as the Darkfriend Padan Fain.

The Wheel of Time novels have so many characters that each of the 14 books is accompanied by a glossary of their names as well as a pronunciation guide. The show hasn't shied away from the massive cast, or in building up the complex and involved world created by Robert Jordan.

Executive produced and written by Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time stars Pike as Moiraine Damodred and Daniel Henney as her Warder, Lan. The five young people accompanying them will be played by Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Barney Harris and Madeleine Madden. The series will release on Amazon Prime in Nov. 2021.
