Not only did Tom Hiddleston give the cast of Loki lessons about the God of Mischief and his mindset, but he also got many of them pumped up before filming.
Director Kate Herron spoke to Polygon about her favorite on-set memories, and she revealed how Hiddleston's pre-shooting regime enchanted his costars. "Sometimes he runs around set to get himself in the right mindset before he performs," Herron said. "He does pushups. You know, you’re going into an action scene, you want to look like you’ve just been running. And it became infectious across all the cast."
"We’ve got so much footage of — I think Jack [Veal] ended up doing it, who plays Kid Loki. I’ve got [shots of] him and Sophia [Di Martino, who plays Syvlie] doing pushups and squats, just to get ready. It was so funny watching that echo across all the cast. I think all of them ended up doing those exercises with him at some point. It was so funny."
Beyond getting the cast nice and sweaty before their action scenes, Herron revealed that Hiddleston was also a calming and welcoming presence on set as the actors and crew filmed during quarantine.
"I would say my favorite thing is his enthusiasm," Herron said. "He’s a very kind, empathetic person. We were filming this in quite tough circumstances, a lot of people were far from home and isolating, and he brought this warmth and energy and joy to the set every day. And I think that made everyone feel very safe and very bonded. I’m forever grateful to him for doing that."
That bond was especially important for the actors, like Veal and Di Martino, who were playing a version of Loki. And across numerous interviews, the actors on Loki have all made it clear that Hiddleston truly loves and understands the character he's spent so long playing. It's no surprise, then, that Loki will return for a second season, as Hiddleston is clearly not done playing the character. As for Kid Loki and Sylvie, they likely have a big future in the MCU as well.
Herron talked about how more Sylvie was added to the script as the writers began exploring her past more, and the director thinks they've only just scratched the surface. Veal, meanwhile, is all but guaranteed to return as Kid Loki for the inevitable Young Avengers adaptation that Marvel has spent years setting up with numerous teen heroes.
Loki Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.
