Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans Forgot Its Most Crucial Weapon

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, now streaming on Netflix.

In Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, despite the heroes from Trollhunters, 3Below and Wizards teaming up, the dark gods known as the Arcane Order can't be beaten. They've brainwashed Nari, the Earth elemental, to rejoin their villainous ranks, and they brought up the three Titans -- Fire, Ice and Earth -- who are trekking to Arcadia to kick off the apocalypse and rebuild the planet. However, it's strange Jim and co. didn't use their secret weapon, which could have ended the film by act one.

This is the reactor that Toby has in his taco van, which Stuart and Krel helped build, mixing Earth tech with alien science from Akiridion-5, as well as mystical elements. The radiation allows them to create a field that nullifies magic, which is what they use when Bellroc (the Fire elemental) and Skrael (the Ice elemental) try to kidnap Nari on a train in Arcadia. For a brief moment, the field nullifies their powers and allows Douxie to use physical weapons against them, but sadly, the generator cuts off when the van gets struck, allowing the villains to power up and steal Nari's physical form.

This weapon is then forgotten, even though they could've continued to use it or applied its technology to other tools. One also wonders why they didn't connect with Princess Aja back on her homeworld to perfect it, especially as the aliens were building weapons such as Varvatos Vex's Gun Robot. It's so odd they didn't even make a backup or even mass produce it as they knew the Order would be coming for Nari, so much so they laid the trap on the train by using her as bait.

Instead, the reactor's not even mentioned when the squad realizes Nari's been snatched for the ritual. The crew ends up finding the gods in a train station and after breaking the cloaking enchantment, they try firing at the ritual, but no attack can penetrate. Had the reactor been there, they would have been able to depower the gods, stop Nari from being brainwashed and prevent the ritual from being completed. With the two evil gods vulnerable, they could have also killed off Skrael and Bellroc, so the ritual could never be instigated again.

It's all done for plot convenience, so the Titans could rise up and converge on their hometown, which is confirmed as the center of the universe. Ironically, Toby remembers the reactor's in his van in the finale, and after Nari and Skrael kill each other, he generates a wave that depowers Bellroc on the Fire Titan.

This allows Jim to use Excalibur to kill the god, but  had Toby used the reactor beforehand, none of this would have been needed, thus saving many allies and stopping the cataclysmic destruction. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, based on Guillermo del Toro's Tales of Arcadia trilogy series, is now streaming on Netflix.
