In some Pokémon families, the progression between evolutions is clear to see, with a theme that runs throughout each design. Other evolutions are not as straightforward, however. Sometimes there's a story behind an evolution, while other times the only people who know why seemingly disparate Pokémon belong to the same family are the designers who created them.
For whatever reason, certain creatures look completely unrelated to their previous form in their evolution family. There's one Pokémon that doesn't just look different to its pre-evolved form but even weighs less, while another family has two Pokémon that look unrelated entirely to their previous form.
10 Solgaleo Is A Lion That Evolves From A Cosmic Orb
Depending on the game, whether it's Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon, Cosmoem evolves into Solgaleo or Lunala. In terms of appearance, the Sunne Pokémon Solgaleo doesn't have all that much in common with its pre-evolved form. The Protostar Pokémon goes from being a 0'04" dark-blue orb to an 11'02" white lion. The biggest change, however, is one that can't be seen. Despite being a lot smaller, Cosmoem weighs 2204.4 lbs., while Solgaleo weighs 507.1 lbs.
9 Malamar Is Its Pre-Evolved Inkay Form Upside-Down
The reason why Malamar looks so different from its pre-evolved form Inkay lies in the way it evolves, which is possibly the most unique evolution requirement of all. In Pokémon X and Y, Inkay evolves into Malamar when the game system is held upside-down during leveling up, so Malamar is actually an upside-down Inkay. The Revolving Pokémon goes from being a cute floating squid to a much more fierce-looking bipedal squid when it evolves into the Overturning Pokémon.
8 Vivillon Doesn't Look Like It Should Come Out Of Spewpa
Spewpa is based on carpet moths, although one might not know it by looking at it. The Scatterdust Pokémon has an androgynous look about it, which makes its evolution into Vivillon, based on butterflies, all the more striking.
The only similarities in their appearance are the grey body and the multicolored squares that cover Spewpa's fur and Vivillon's wings, which give a pixelated effect to the Pokémon. Apart from those, it's not exactly easy to tell they're from the same family.
7 Salamence Is A Large Dragon That Evolves From The Spherical Shellgon
Salamence evolves from Shellgon, which is based on a dragon in a pupal stage. Shellgon's body is covered in bones that form a shell, giving it a subdued appearance. Salamence, on the other hand, is a large blue dragon with red wings, making it hard to see that these two Pokémon are in the same family upon first glance. Strangely, Shellgon weighs more than Salamence, at 243.6 lbs. compared to 226.2 lbs.
6 Glalie And Froslass Both Look Unrelated To Snorunt
Snorunt can evolve into either Glalie or Froslass, and neither of these evolutions look particularly like they belong to the Snorunt family. Glalie has Snorunt's blue eyes and big teeth, but its spherical shape and horns distinguish it from its first form. Froslass is the other final form of Snorunt, and it deviates even more from its evolutionary predecessor than Glalie. The Snow Land Pokémon has a humanoid appearance, purple face, and wears a white kimono.
5 Cofagrigus And Yamask Don't Have Much In Common
The Spirit Pokémon Yamask is a small, cute, and shadowy form that holds a gold mask, but when it evolves and becomes Cofagrigus, it transforms into a large blue and gold coffin with four arms. The mask that Yamask holds is embedded in the coffin, and the arms of Cofagrigus are also black, but apart from that, there's not much to show that these two Pokémon are related.
4 Forretress Isn't What You'd Expect Pineco To Evolve Into
Only the designer of these Pokémon knows why Pineco evolves the way it does. Pineco is a teal-colored pine cone that evolves into Forretress, which looks like a bagworm inside a walnut shell.
The final form of Pineco is spherical and red with four protrusions that poke out between its white shell. Based on appearances alone, there's nothing to tell that these two Pokémon aren't completely unrelated altogether.
3 Vikavolt Is Part Of A Dysfunctional Family
The Charjabug family is a rather dysfunctional one. Charjabug is a green, cube-shaped Pokémon based on a battery, and when it evolves, it becomes Vikavolt, a blue and yellow Pokémon based on a stag beetle and a railgun. It's not easy to see the progression in terms of design between the mid-stage form and the final form of Grubbin, which also looks as if it's unrelated to the other members of its family.
2 Huntail Looks Different And Is A Different Species To Clamperl
Clamperl evolves into one of two Pokémon, Huntail and Gorebyss. While neither look much like their pre-evolved form, Gorebyss, although an eel and therefore a different species to its predecessor, is at least the same color as Clamperl's pink pearl. Huntail, on the other hand, looks completely different to Clamperl. Also an eel, Huntail is light blue and has a vicious look that deviates strongly from the adorable, sleepy-looking Clamperl.
1 The Magnificent Milotic Evolves From The Feeble Feebas
The difference between Feebas and Milotic is stark. One is a rather bland and unappealing fish; the other is a beautiful and elegant serpent-like creature. Up until Gen 5, Feebas evolved into Milotic in the games by having its Beautiful condition leveled up high enough. After Gen 5, the Fish Pokémon evolves when traded holding a Prism Scale, which, as shown in the anime, form naturally on Feebas, implying that beauty is inherently within the Fish Pokémon.
