5 Anime Characters Who Can Weaponize Their Anger (& 5 Who Can't)

The concept of anger has been explored through many different angles in anime. Sometimes, it is seen as a completely destructive force that an individual must overcome, while in other instances, it can empower one to do what is necessary.

Subsequently, many anime characters address their rage differently; some are able to harness it productively on the battlefield, while others lose themselves to their passions (with disastrous result). By identifying characters from both groups, we can better determine what is a healthy amount of rage and those who officially cross the line.

10 Can Handle Anger: Inosuke Uses His Rage To Boost His Strength & Pain Tolerance (Demon Slayer)

Inosuke is Tanjiro's berserk companion in Demon Slayer and a young man who relies heavily on his anger. Since he doesn't have his friend's versatility or Zenitsu's speed, he enters a state of perturbing craze just to keep up.

The results of his rage are immediately evident. Not only does it raise his pain tolerance so much that he can simply ignore the effects of broken bones, it gave him the courage he needed to confront a spider demon and cut through its hardened skin by hammering one blade against another.

9 Loses Control: Ryuko Became A Monster In Her Quest For Revenge (Kill La Kill)

Ryuko Matoi's obsession with avenging her father's death nearly portended disaster in Kill la Kill. After Nui Harime revealed her actions and taunted the young woman, she overcharged Senketsu with her blood and turned herself into a monster.

In her maligned state, Ryuko failed to discriminate between ally and enemy, quickly becoming a danger to the entire academy. Satsuki herself was prepared to put her sister down before Mako brought her back by hugging her.

8 Can Handle Anger: Eren Has Seldom Regretted Anything He Has Done While Enraged (Attack On Titan)

Eren's aggressive fighting style and wrathful philosophy entails that he is often angry. During the battle for Marley in Attack on Titan's fourth season, there was no hesitation in killing the enemy nation's top leaders regardless of potential civilian casualties. However, he never lets his disposition get the better of him; the antihero seldom regrets his actions, especially those directed against former or current threats.

The only exception can be found when Eren lost control of himself in Trost and lunged for Mikasa. Fortunately, it was the only instance where he wasn't completely aware of what he was doing.

7 Loses Control: Jugo Becomes A Danger To Everyone Around Him When Succumbing To His Condition (Naruto)

Jugo's condition significantly enhances his strength and durability to the extent that he could survive direct punches from the Forth Raikage and even a kunai knife through the head. In theory, this should make him a valuable asset to Sasuke when in pursuit of his objectives.

However, the more power Jugo harnesses, the less likely he is to control his darker urges. Under extreme circumstances, he can pose just as much of a threat to his comrades as he does his adversaries.

6 Can Handle Anger: Whenever Josuke Loses It, Things Work Out Anyway (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Although Josuke has something of a temper (especially when his hair is insulted), he never lets innocent bystanders get caught up in his anger. Moreover, things tend to work out decently even after he has abandoned all semblances of self preservation.

For instance, Rohan Kishibe's Heaven's Door was useless against Josuke because he was blinded by rage. As a result, there was nothing the manga artist could do to prevent his youthful adversary from beating him up.

5 Loses Control: Meliodas Surrenders To His Demonic Nature When Pushed (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Meliodas, protagonist of The Seven Deadly Sins, may carry himself with a jovial disposition, but his welcoming grin belies darker and more sinister inclinations. Due to the curse issued by his father, every death will make the captain progressively more like a demon.

After being murdered by Estarossa and the Ten Commandments, Meliodas had no reservations about killing Fraudrin even though the villain already surrendered. While his comrades didn't disagree that Fraudrin needed to die, they were alarmed by their leader's sudden and morbid bloodlust.

4 Can Handle Anger: Bakugo May Be Hotheaded, But He Never Goes Too Far (My Hero Academia)

As one of My Hero Academia's aspiring number one Heroes, Bakugo often treats his comrades as if he has already surpassed them and gets annoyed when they act as if they're on even footing. He was particularly belligerent toward Midoriya, prompting their fight on U.A. grounds.

Despite his pugnacious disposition, Bakugo's anger has never caused irreversible harm to anyone. Moreover, his rage is tempered through humility and the many failures he is forced to reconcile with.

3 Loses Control: Luffy Throws Caution To The Wind When He's Genuinely Upset (One Piece)

When any of his friends have been hurt or insulted throughout One Piece, Luffy throws caution to the wind in order to set things right. In some instances, his aggression works out; he defeated Arlong to avenge Nami and saved Ace from the gallows of Marineford (only to lose him shortly after).

However, Luffy's behavior has also placed him in grave and almost fatal peril. He nearly died for his recklessness against Crocodile and Magellan, two logia-type villains who he hadn't bothered with devising a strategy for defeating before arriving at the battlefield.

2 Can Handle Anger: Light Never Lets His Emotions Get The Best Of Him (Death Note)

In Light's quest to "cleanse" society, L's actions often place him at considerable risk of being exposed or otherwise sabotaging his regularly scheduled killings. Frequently on the verge of being outsmarted, he sometimes displays extreme anger and psychopathy through internal monologues.

Despite his inner feelings, Light never actually acts on or expresses his anger. Instead, he uses it to fuel whatever deranged plans he can think of to foist on his detective rival and whoever else might stop him from becoming a god with the Death Note.

1 Loses Control: Gon Freecss Nearly Got Himself Killed For Vengeance (Hunter X Hunter)

While Hunter x Hunter's usually happy-go-lucky protagonist Gon is difficult to anger, he arguably takes more extreme measures than any other anime protagonist when his limit has finally been reached. In order to avenge Kite's death, he placed a Nen condition on himself that significantly increased his strength at the cost of his health and longevity.

What resulted was a completely one-sided fight against Neferpitou where he brutalized the villain without ever letting up. Although Gon ultimately attained the revenge he sought, it would take a (literal) miracle for him to recover from his injuries.
