Batgirl Co-Director Shares a Look at the Latest Script Draft

The co-director of HBO Max's upcoming Batgirl film has shared a look at the latest draft of the script.

Adil El Arbi, who is co-directing Batgirl with Bilall Fallah, posted a picture of the script from Christina Hodson on his Instagram Stories. While no additional info was shared, it proves the movie is nearing a production start not long after landing star Leslie Grace.

Last month, Grace, fresh off her starring role in In the Heights, nabbed the coveted role of Barbara Gordon in the Batgirl solo film. The movie will be skipping theaters and premiere directly on HBO Max, part of a new strategy from Warner Bros. The script for the film is being handled by Bumblebee and Birds of Prey writer Hodson, who also wrote the upcoming The Flash film for WB and DC.

Hodson joined the project back in 2018, just two months after Joss Whedon left the project. Whedon was announced the year prior as the film's director and writer. While the project went silent for a time, the Bad Boys 4 Life directing duo came aboard in May of this year.

"With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham," producer Kristin Burr said in May. "Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool."

Bat-Girl debuted in 1961's Batman #139 as Betty Kane, but the more well-known Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, replaced her in 1967's Detective Comics #359. Alicia Silverstone played Batgirl in 1997's Batman & Robin, and Barbara Gordon currently appears on HBO Max's Titans, albeit as the commissioner of GCPD herself rather than in her superhero persona.

Rumors of J.K. Simmons returning as Commissioner Jim Gordon have recently swirled, which could tie the film into the existing DCEU films. Interestingly, Whedon previously directed Simmons as Gordon for his version of Justice League. Gordon will also be played by Jefferey Wright in The Batman, though that film seems to exist in a separate universe from the main DCEU.

Batgirl has yet to receive a release date.
