Cobra Kai has already been renewed for Season 5.
Ahead of the Season 4 premiere, Netflix announced that Cobra Kai will return for a fifth season and is set to start production in Atlanta, GA this fall.
This announcement comes after Netflix confirmed the release window for Season 4 of The Karate Kid spinoff series, which is set to premiere on the streaming service sometime in December. A teaser for Season 4 also confirmed the return of the All Valley Karate Tournament, which was featured in the original 1984 The Karate Kid movie. Season 4 of Cobra Kai officially wrapped production in May 2021 after over three months of filming.
Promotional materials for Season 4 have teased a difficult new journey for the characters, particularly with a teaser trailer confirming the return of Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver, the main antagonist of the 1989 film The Karate Kid Part III. On top of that, a Season 4 poster featuring the villainous character is accompanied by the text, "Now the real pain begins," a reference to a line spoken by Silver to Daniel LaRusso in Karate Kid III.
Cobra Kai is set 34 years after the events of the original 1984 film The Karate Kid. The series originally premiered on YouTube Premium in May 2018 and, following the release of Season 2 on the platform, Netflix won a bidding war to stream the series for Season 3. Cobra Kai centers around Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Danny LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), who are now adults and senseis of their own respective dojos (Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do Karate). All three seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix.
Season 1 of Cobra Kai saw Johnny Lawrence reviving the Cobra Kai dojo and taking on Miguel, who is frequently bullied by his classmates, as his first student. Things get messy when Miguel develops feelings for Daniel's daughter Samantha and Daniel takes on Johnny's estranged son Robby Keene as his own student. Season 2 later brought back John Kreese, the original Cobra Kai sensei, with Season 3 eventually leading to Johnny and Danny joining forces to take on a shared enemy in Season 4, likely Terry Silver.
The series recently received four Emmy nominations for its third season, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation, Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation and Outstanding Stunt Performance.
Cobra Kai Season 4 premieres on Netflix in December 2021.
