Eternals' Kit Harington Explains Why He Joined the MCU Film | CBR

Eternals star Kit Harington discussed why he wanted to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and what convinced him to play Dane Whitman in the film.

The former Game of Thrones actor spoke to SiriusXM about the upcoming movie, which will finally arrive this November after being delayed by the pandemic. "I'm a big fan of the MCU," Harington said. "So when they come knocking, it's very exciting." Harington went on to explain what enticed him about the project.

"The character, I won't go into why he interests me, because it's more than my life is worth to tell you," Harington joked. "But what did interest me about that piece was that it has ChloƩ Zhao directing. I met her and spoke with her and was so impressed by her. The cast was sort of phenomenal and wide-ranging and diverse. It just looked like they were doing something really different with this movie. I can't tell you much about it but we filmed it pre-pandemic. And it's coming out finally, it was sort of frustrating that it got pushed back so much. But now I'll be going on and doing some press for that soon and it's really exciting."

While Whitman is the current Black Knight in Marvel Comics, the original hero was created in 1955 by Stan Lee and Joe Maneely for Marvel's precursor, Atlas Comics. Black Knight, AKA Sir Percy of Scandia, used armor enchanted by Merlin and the mythical Ebony Blade, a magical sword carved from a meteorite. In 1964, Lee and Dick Ayers created a new Black Knight for Tales to Astonish #52, a descendant of Sir Percy. Finally, 1967's The Avengers #47 gave Dane Whitman, the nephew of the former Black Knight, the Ebony Blade.

While Harington hasn't been featured much in the marketing for Eternals, it's likely he'll go on to have a larger role in the MCU moving forward. "He's a really amazing actor," Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said in 2019. "This part came up in the Eternals film that we're doing. We were so happy that he agreed to join, and it is a part that could perhaps grow into something else in the future."
