Hideaki Anno Teases A Possible Evangelion Continuation | CBR

Evangelion 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon A Time is the grand finale of the Rebuild of Evangelion series, but it might not necessarily be the last story told in that world.

In a new interview with Collider, series creator and director Hideaki Anno revealed that he has more ideas about further stories that could be told in Evangelion's world. While Thrice Upon A Time gives a definitive end to Shinji's story, there are gaps in the timeline and stories about other characters that could be fleshed out in further Evangelion projects. "There's always the 14-year gap in the story, so in some form, I want to shed light into that," Anno said, referring to the 14 year time skip that occurs between the end of the second Rebuild movie, You Can (Not) Advance, and the third movie in the series, You Can (Not) Redo. Prior to this interview, voice actor Maaya Sakamoto also revealed that there was more backstory to her character, Mari Illustrious Makinami, than what was shown in any of the movies. While Anno mused on the directions the franchise could go in the future, he once again reiterated that 3.0+1.01 will still be the final entry in the franchise that he works on himself, saying "At this point, I don't feel that I'm going to continue the story where I left off."

Anno is already working on his next project, the live-action theatrical reboot of Toei's long-running Kamen Rider franchise, entitled Shin Kamen Rider. Anno has worked on several live-action movies in the past, most notably 2017's critically acclaimed Shin Godzilla, and has stated that he wants to work on several more live-action films before he returns to the world of animation. Shin Kamen Rider is currently scheduled to premiere sometime in 2023.

Evangelion 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon A Time recently made its international debut on Amazon Prime Video. The movie is the final part of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, which began as a fairly direct theatrical remake of the original 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, but following the ending of the second movie, began to diverge into a substantially different and completely original storyline.

All four movies in the Rebuild of Evangelion series are now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The original Neon Genesis Evangelion series is available for streaming on Netflix, and will soon be re-released on Blu-ray and DVD by GKIDS.
