How Chris Evans Paved the Way for Gemma Chan's Eternals Casting

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed how Chris Evans being cast as Captain America led to Gemma Chan's casting as Sersi in Eternals.

While speaking to EW, Feige said that Marvel not casting Chan for the movie "would have been shooting ourselves in the foot." "I can go back to Chris Evans being on the list for Captain America, and some people said, 'Oh, well, he played the Human Torch [in 2005's Fantastic Four]. Maybe we shouldn't consider him,'" Feige added. "And we said, 'No, that's okay,' and the rest is history."

In addition, Chan herself had previously delved into Sersi's character, revealing that the movie will change Sersi's powers. "Sersi is not your typical superhero: she's not necessarily the best fighter, she doesn't have the most obviously impressive powers," Chan stated. "The main thing is she's an empath. She has a connection with humans, and with the world and the Earth. That is her strength, so I leant into that."

Chan previously played Minn-Erva in 2019's Captain Marvel, a member of the Kree team known as Starforce, alongside Carol Danvers. She formed an antagonistic relationship with the titular superhero and eventually met her demise in battle.

The synopsis for Eternals can be found below:

When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The new synopsis was released shortly after the premiere of Eternals' final trailer, which expanded on many of the details that the original description hinted at, including the connection between the events of the upcoming film and the events of Avengers: Endgame. Ajak can be heard in the clip explaining, "Five years ago, Thanos erased half of the population of the universe. But the people of this planet brought everyone back with the snap of a finger. The sudden return of the population provided the necessary energy for the emergence to begin."

Eternals is set to introduce a variety of new superheroes with its cast consisting of Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman/Black Knight. These Eternals were created by celestials in order to fight deviants. The trailer hints that they will have to come together to combat deviants and an apocalyptic event known as the emergence.

Directed by ChloĆ© Zhao, Eternals is set to hit theaters on Nov. 5.
