Hunger Games Prequel to Start Filming Next Year | CBR

Each instalment in The Hunger Games film saga was a hit, so it was no surprise when Lionsgate announced that it was developing a prequel film.

While there has been a lack of news surrounding the project, Lionsgate motion picture group chairman Joe Drake recently announced at a quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts that the prequel film, based on author Suzanne Collins' The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will begin production some time in the first half of 2022 and will be released either in late 2023 or early 2024.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released in bookstores in May 2020, though the author had been collaborating with Lionsgate on the film adaptation since 2019. With regard to progress, Drake stated on the call that pre-production was "moving along really, really well." No further details were provided. Meanwhile, the novel has thus far received mixed reviews with some criticizing its length and choice of protagonist.

The Hunger Games film franchise began with the 2012 film of the same name, which became a global success and spawned three more films. Lionsgate's films have grossed $2.97 billion worldwide. The highest rated film out of the four is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which, alone, earned $865 million at the box office.
