WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League #66 from DC Comics, on sale now.
John Constantine is not the sort of person one would normally call heroic. The British occultist is an anti-hero at best, grifting and drifting his way through life at the expense of anyone who gets too close. Some of his more notorious exploits include making deals with multiple devils at the same time, having an archangel kicked out of heaven, and getting Zatanna's father killed during an occult ritual.
However, he is also a member of the Justice League Dark, and as such has been given access to the Hall of Justice. Furthermore, in Justice League #66 (by Brian Michael Bendis, Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur, Trish Mulvihill, Hi-Fi and Josh Reed), Constantine proved he was more of a hero than anyone would have guessed in a moment where he was every bit as selfless as the iconic Man of Steel, Superman.
The two Justice League teams currently operate out of the same headquarters. One of the newest members to join the main team is Naomi, a powerful girl from another dimension who was adopted and raised by a couple on Earth. Naomi's parents were touring the Hall of Justice when it was attacked by one of Superman's enemies, an alien known as the Synmar Utopica. This powerful alien easily fought his way through the entire League.
Naomi took her parents to the basement of the Hall of Justice for safety. The lower levels were filled with mystical objects belonging to Justice League Dark. She hoped to find someone like Doctor Fate or Detective Chimp to watch over her family but instead ran into John Constantine, who was just exiting the restroom in his normal, crass manner. This was not a good first impression, but there were more pressing matters that required the attention of the young Justice Leaguer, so Naomi returned to the fight, leaving her parents in Constantine's care.
Not long afterwards, the Synmar Utopica destroyed the Hall of Justice, turning its roof into a smoking crater. Naomi rushed to check in on her parents, afraid that they might have been crushed by falling rubble. Instead, she discovered that Constantine had instinctively played the role of a hero, saving her parents by quickly teleporting them to the Hall of Fate in order to ensure that they were safe from the destruction.
It is surprising that Constantine was so quick to act heroically in a way that saved others. Although this is not the first time he has saved people, his first instinct is usually to simply look out for himself. He also has a disturbing habit of getting others hurt when he tries to do the right thing. However, in this instance, Constantine acted selflessly and saved others' lives without a moment's hesitation. It seems that he has grown to a point where he has more in common with other members of the Justice League, and may be in the beginning phases of creating a new reputation for himself.
