The newest Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian special took a look at the Season 2 finale and revealed Lucasfilm and Disney+ used fake scripts and concept art to convince the cast and crew that it was Plo Koon who'd rescue Grogu -- not Luke Skywalker. However, now that the Kel Dor's out of the bag, some fans wish it really was Plo Koon instead of Luke.
The general consensus on Twitter is that Plo Koon showing up instead of Luke would have simply been "cooler." Many are even willing to overlook the character's death in Revenge of the Sith, citing Maul's return in The Clone Wars as an example of how such events can be retconned to great effect.
Plo Koon was a Kel Dor Jedi Master who debuted in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as a member of the Jedi Council. He'd go on to appear in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the latter of which saw him gunned down on Cato Neimoidia as part of Order 66. However, the character is famously one of Dave Filoni's favorite Jedi, so he naturally factored into The Clone Wars as well.
Plo Koon's would-be appearance in The Mandalorian caught many fans off-guard when the new Disney Gallery special debuted, but Bo-Katan Kryze actor Katee Sackhoff previously shed some light on this in April. "That's who we thought that it was at the end of [The Mandalorian Season 2 finale]. That's who we thought it was, was Plo Koon," she explained. "That's who we were told it was, and I'm a very gullible person. When somebody tries to tell me something, I say 'Okay.'"
The Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," saw Din Djarin, Cara Dune, Bo-Katan Kryze, Koska Reeves and Fennec Shand board Moff Gideon's ship to rescue Grogu. When it seemed they'd soon become victims to the Dark Troopers, though, a lone X-Wing arrived and a cloaked Jedi wielding a familiar green lightsaber made short work of the droid soldiers. This Jedi, of course, was Luke Skywalker, played by a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill.
"Talk about unexpected," Hamill said in July. "I had finished playing that part, I never expected to do it again. I thought if they ever told stories of Luke in that period, post the originals and pre-sequels, they'd get an actor, you know, an age-appropriate actor. So when John Favreau and Dave Filoni told me about what they wanted to do I was just stunned."
