Though Marvel Disney+ shows are just getting started, they show zero signs of slowing down. Even before shows like WandaVision and Loki became the massive hits they are now, plans for future storytelling opportunities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe were already well underway. Disney's Investor Day call in late 2020 revealed an overwhelming number of upcoming projects from some of the biggest media franchises of the decade like Star Wars and Marvel. In fact, Kevin Feige announced both Secret Invasion and Armor Wars during the Marvel segment.
Since that point, however, updates on Armor Wars have been minimal, mostly due to the four brand-new series the studio released in 2021 alone. But based on interviews with the show's star and the original Armor Wars comic event, a lot about the story the Disney+ series will set out to tell might already be known.
According to Disney, Armor Wars is "based on the classic Marvel comic series" and will follow "James Rhodes aka War Machine who must face what happens when Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands." Cheadle is the only cast member officially announced, and these official details, though vague, hint that the series will continue to tell stories about the mark Stark and his inventions left on the world after his death in Avengers: Endgame.
If the show uses the original comics as its foundation, however, it's possible to identify a few story beats the show can touch. The original Armor Wars comic focuses on Tony Stark/Iron Man, one obvious major difference between the source material and the upcoming Disney+ show. In the comic, Tony discovers that someone has been selling his armor designs to villains, and he tries to track them down before more Iron Man copycat suits cause unnecessary harm. A similar story will likely play out on-screen, with Rhodey taking on the task of saving the world from Tony's designs brought to life with evil in mind.
A trailer has yet to be released for Disney+'s Armor Wars. This article will be updated when a trailer is released.
At this point, a release date for Marvel's Armor Wars Disney+ series has not been announced, as the series' writer, Yassir Lester, was only recently announced. It also hasn't been specified whether the show is a limited series, or if it has the potential to run multiple seasons the way Loki will when it returns for a second season. Both WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier finished after one season, with no plans to continue because of plans on the big screen. But the future of War Machine's story is uncertain, and, similar to Loki, Marvel might not announce plans for multiple seasons of Armor Wars until the first nears its conclusion.
According to series star Don Cheadle, though, it's likely the series will start filming sometime in 2022, making a 2023 release date possible.
This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
