Peacemaker: DC May Have Confirmed an Earlier Premiere Date | CBR

HBO Max's Peacemaker series may have just been given an earlier release date.

A Fan News piece from DC discusses how The Suicide Squad has set up the upcoming series from James Gunn, which will once again star WWE wrestler John Cena as the Peacemaker. While the piece is mostly opinionated and from the writer's personal point of view, the closing boilerplate is something that will draw fans' eyes. It reads, "Look for the Peacemaker series to make its debut in 2021."

Filming on the series wrapped this past July, which had been shooting for a Jan. 2022 release date. However, this statement would imply that fans may see the series arrive sooner, providing less wait time to see Cena return after The Suicide Squad's exit from theaters and HBO Max next week on Sept. 5. Of course, Gunn and Cena are hopeful to see the character more beyond a single season.

Gunn has previously discussed wanting to do at least one more season after the series' first 8-episode run. "You know, there's not a big plan in place, but again, it's something I would love to do and I know that the cast would love to do," the director has previously said. He felt that unlike the other characters from The Suicide Squad who have definitive, conclusive storylines (and deaths), Peacemaker was a character whose story didn't wrap tightly and there was more story to tell there.

"Peacemaker is a douche and he stays a douche and he's an asshole in the movie," Gunn previously said, "But I think there's something below that. The Suicide Squad saw Peacemaker perform the unforgivable when he killed one of the few good souls to serve on the squad, Col. Rick Flag. While Peacemaker didn't want to kill Flag, he was willing to since "keeping the peace is worth any price."

Of course, karma found its way around to Peacemaker, who was later shot in the throat by Bloodsport. The last anyone saw of the character was in the film's end-credit scene, where he was recovering in a hospital, believed by staff to be one of the "heroes" that helped save Corto Maltese from Starro the Conqueror. In that scene, it is revealed that Amanda Waller still had plans for the trained killer, which will be explored in his series.

Fans may not have to wait as long if its release has seemingly been moved up to 2021 from the scheduled Jan. 2021 date. The series will be available to stream on HBO Max.
