WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 2, "Red Hood," available now on HBO Max.
The first episode of Titans Season 3 hides some pretty big Easter eggs hinting at new characters who may eventually arrive on the HBO Max series. Those include potential Batman villains, Robins and more. However, one subtle Easter egg teases the arrival of one of the titular group's most dangerous enemies in the comics: The Church of Blood.
Towards the start of Titans Season 3, Episode 1, "Barbara Gordon," comic book Robin Tim Drake makes his debut. The young man is almost immediately harassed by two police officers, who claim he's out past curfew. Luckily, Tim's job as a delivery driver gives him a reason to be out and about, and the police eventually leave. Following that confrontation, Tim rides his bike back to the restaurant where he works, and on the way, he passes a sign advertising the "Church of Blood."
Created by Marv Wolfman and George PĂ©rez, the Church of Blood first appeared in 1982's New Teen Titans #21 and is led by Brother Blood, who himself has appeared on a variety of DC TV shows. The villainous cult, which is bent on world domination, has proven itself a worthy foe to the Titans, nearly defeating the team on several occasions. The Church of Blood also has a major connection to Titans Season 1, as the group secretly worships Trigon. That villain -- who is Rachel Roth/Raven's father -- was the main antagonist of the show's opening season and second season premiere.
In Titans Season 1, Trigon's followers were known as The Organization, and it's entirely possible the Church of Blood may be an offshoot of that original group. If that's the case, the Church of Blood may try and resurrect Trigon -- as it has in the comics. This means the Titans might once again find themselves contending with Trigon -- or at least those trying to bring him back.
At this time, it's unclear if the Church of Blood Easter egg in "Barbara Gordon" hints at anything deeper. Currently, the Titans are tied up fighting Jason Todd/Red Hood. The threat of Starfire's sister -- Blackfire -- is also still in the background after her appearance at the end of Season 2. As such, the show is definitely full up with villains. So if the Church of Blood is coming, it may very well not be this season. Still, when she returns from attempting to resurrect Donna Troy/Wonder Girl on Themyscira, Raven may find her oldest foe isn't as gone as she thought.
The first three episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 4 will release on Aug. 19.
