Trailer for Canceled Duke Nukem Prequel Game Surfaces | CBR

In 2008, Gregor Punchatz directed a trailer for a new Duke Nukem game -- a prequel called Duke Nukem Begins. However, the game was delayed and canceled before fans could see the trailer. 13 years later, Punchatz released it to the public "because it is still a piece I am damn proud of."

Punchatz uploaded the trailer to YouTube, providing viewers a glimpse of what Duke Nukem Begins would have looked like. It features the titular Duke dual-wielding shotguns and pistols, even using a pig monster's limb as a melee weapon at one point. Fans of the classic video game franchise can also spot the iconic shrinker and freezethrower from 1996's Duke Nukem 3D. Based on the trailer, the game would have been a third-person shooter with four-player co-op.

Janimation, a production studio based in Dallas, Texas, was hired by game developer Gearbox to create a trailer for Duke New Begins. Punchatz was the lead for the project, working on the modeling and design of Duke and directing the final product. "We poured everything we had into making the most awesome cinematic Janimation had ever created," he explained in the YouTube description for the trailer.

Unfortunately, Duke Nukem Begins was ultimately canceled due to a legal dispute over the character. "It crushed us, as this was what we thought could help us compete with bigger players in the game trailer market at the time," Punchatz stated.

Punchatz previously leaked footage from the Duke Nukem Begins' trailer back in 2019. Now that the complete trailer is available to fans, he appears hopeful that it may bring new life to the Duke Nukem franchise. "I hope this somehow resurrects this version of the game by showing the world how awesome it would have been," he concluded.
