Trailer Round-Up: Doom Patrol, The Witcher, Lucifer | CBR

As summer settles into its final month and August 2021 hits its halfway point, summer television season comes to an end, along with the first major wave of blockbusters since movie theaters have begun reopening nationwide. And as the entertainment industry prepares to unveil its new movies for the end of the year, it's anime and video games that dominated this week's trailers.

Here are all the biggest trailers, teasers and promos released this past week, from upcoming premieres on Netflix and HBO Max to video games set to roll out in the months to come.

After its second season came to an abrupt end last year due to the pandemic, Doom Patrol is returning for its third season next month on HBO Max. In addition to resolving the epic cliffhanger from the impromptu Season 2 finale, the series' latest trailer introduces the sinister Sisterhood of Dada and other familiar DC supervillains while Chief comes to terms with his daughter's superhuman powers.

Starring Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Matt Bomer, Brendan Fraser, Joivan Wade and Timothy Dalton, Doom Patrol Season 3 premieres Sept. 23 on HBO Max.

After enduring production delays for two years, the Eureka Seven: Hi-Evolution film series is set to conclude this November with the anime film Eureka: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution. A new trailer picks up where the second film in the planned trilogy left off, with the real world merged with the virtual world by aliens and tensions quickly rising between the two populaces now forced to share the same living space.

Directed by Tomoki Kyoda, Eureka: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution premieres in Japan Nov. 26. No North American release date has been announced at this time.

Fate Grand/Order has received a new anime film in Fate Grand/Order: Final Singularity - The Grand Temple of Time: Solomon, wrapping up the first story arc from the popular mobile game that spawned the anime adaptation. And after encountering numerous mythological and historical figures, protagonists Ritsuka and Mash prepare for a showdown with Solomon.

Directed by Toshifumi Akai, Fate Grand/Order: Final Singularity - The Grand Temple of Time: Solomon is currently running in Japanese theaters. No North American release date has currently been announced.

Three years after its initial launch, the popular post-apocalyptic city-building game Frostpunk has announced a sequel in development with a cinematic trailer. While no gameplay footage, release date or platforms intended for launch have been confirmed, the sequel is set to take place thirty years after the original game as factions go to war over dwindling oil reserves during an epic blizzard.

Developed and published by 11 bit studios, Frostpunk 2 does not currently have an announced release date.

Another mobile game that has since been successfully adapted into anime is Girls' Frontline, with a new trailer showcasing the anime series and its Japanese voice cast. The cast teases far more development for their characters and the franchise's story, which takes place in a world where the main cast are personifications of their weapons following the collapse of humanity.

Directed by Shigeru Ueda, Girls' Frontline is expected to premiere in 2022.

One of the most popular anime series in the world is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, with the series set to return to Netflix for its fifth season before the end of the year. With the subtitle Stone Ocean, the upcoming season adapts the sixth part of franchise creator Hirohiko Araki's bestselling manga series as new protagonist Jolyne Cujoh is sent to prison, where she is reunited with her father.

Adapting Hirohiko Araki's manga series, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean premieres on Netflix this December.

The acclaimed animated series Kid Cosmic returns to Netflix for its second season next month, and the streaming service has confirmed that it has also renewed the series for a third season. With Season 2 bearing the full title Kid Cosmic and the Intergalactic Truckstop!, the staff and patrons of Mo's Oasis Cafe are now transported across the galaxy as they take on Erodius the Planet Killer.

Created by Craig McCracken, Kid Cosmic Season 2 premieres Sept. 7 on Netflix.

As Lucifer prepares for its sixth and final season, the Prince of Darkness continues to settle into his new role as God. Facing an upstart angel named Rory -- who happens to be the new God's younger sister -- Lucifer actually appears to be taking his heavenly promotion seriously as he enjoys one last series of adventures with Los Angeles Police Detective Chloe Decker through the City of Angels.

Starring Tom Ellis and Lauren German, Lucifer Season 6 premieres on Sept. 10 on Netflix.

Groundbreaking filmmaker George A. Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is being reimagined for modern audiences as an animated film in the upcoming horror movie Night of the Animated Dead. A red band trailer confirms the movie will not skimp out on the blood and gore in animation, as a group of strangers is forced to shelter in a remote house when the dead rise with a taste for human flesh.

Directed by Jason Axinn, Night of the Animated Dead stars Josh Duhamel, DulĂ© Hill, Katharine Isabel, James Roday Rodriguez, Katee Sackhoff, Will Sasso, Jimmi Simpson and Nancy Travis. The film will be released digitally Sept. 21.

The breadth of customization and combat mechanics are explored in the latest trailer for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous ahead of its PC launch next month. After the video game's fantasy setting has been torn apart by a demon invasion, players follow warriors that rise to liberate their kingdom through both real-time and turn-based combat, with an impressive set of options to create their characters.

Developed by Owlcat Games and published by Deep Silver, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous will be released for PC Sept. 2. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports are expected to launch on March 1.

Nicolas Cage is back with a vengeance in the upcoming crime film Prisoners of the Ghostland. Cage portrays a bank robber imprisoned in Samurai Town before being tasked with rescuing the governor's granddaughter, portrayed by Sofia Boutella. And as Cage traverses the wasteland, he engages in duels involving swords and guns in an epic movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Directed by Sion Sono, Prisoners of the Ghostland stars Nicolas Cage, Sofia Boutella, Nick Cassavetes and Ed Skrein. The film will be released in theaters and on digital HD on Sept. 17.

The long-running Adult Swim series Robot Chicken is poised to return for its eleventh season next month, with a fresh set of toy-fueled parodies and spoofs. From riffs on Tiger King and Batman Beyond to Robot Chicken's latest play on Game of Thrones, complete with an appearance by the Night King, the stop-motion animated series continues to prove its staying power as it heads into Season 11.

Created and executive produced by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, Robot Chicken Season 11 premieres Sept. 6 at 12 am ET/PT on Adult Swim.

After the commercially successful reboot film, Smurfs: The Lost Village, in 2017, the blue fantasy folk are returning to television for the CG animated series The Smurfs on Nickelodeon. A trailer for the animated show confirmed that all the major, fan-favorite Smurfs will be present as Gargamel returns to menace their village.

The Smurfs premieres Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon.

The upcoming dark fantasy RPG Tails of Iron showcases its unflinching combat in a new gameplay trailer that features the ability for players to modify and customize their gameplay style through various weapons and armor. While the game has players take on rodent warriors in an immersive fantasy world, Tails of Iron pulls no punches in its epic combat, with a memorable adventure poised to thrill gamers.

Developed by Odd Bug Studio and published by United Label, Tails of Iron will be released Sept. 17 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Marvel Studios' first animated series What If...?, set in the rapidly expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, has officially debuted on Disney+ with the adventures of Captain Carter. The latest promo for the series highlights Peggy Carter's alternate universe tale during World War II, with other snippets teasing twists on established characters and stories straight from the MCU.

The adventures of the younger monster hunter Vesemir are explored in the spinoff animated movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Taking place years before Netflix's main The Witcher series, Nightmare of the Wolf has the School of the Wolf face threats at a time when witchers were generally regarded with deep distrust while hunting monsters around the Continent.

Directed by Kwang Il Han, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf stars Theo James, Lara Pulver, Graham McTavish and Mary McDonnell. The film premieres Aug. 23 on Netflix.
