WandaVision's Kathryn Hahn Discusses the Layered Relationship Between Two Witches

Kathryn Hahn broke down the research process she put into crafting WandaVision's Agatha Harkness and her character's parallels with Wanda Maximoff.

In an interview with The A.V. Club, Hahn talked about reading through Agatha's Fantastic Four comic debut and building a version of the witch that, while inspired by the comics, was also Hahn's own thing. "She's still a nanny, she's still a mother. She still was in New Salem. She still probably is all those things, but how she manifests in this world, at this time with Wanda, is that she probably felt this unbelievable magic that she couldn't put her finger on," she explained. "It was something that she had been looking for probably for centuries and had to get to the bottom of, and found herself in Westview, pretending with Wanda just to try to find out the source of this magic beyond even her understanding of magic."

Hahn also pointed out how, under different circumstances, Agatha and Wanda's Marvel Cinematic Universe dynamic might have been what they shared in the comics. Instead, due to Wanda's magical powers, Agatha was drawn to "this chaos magic that she just had and I could never achieve. That was something that we really leaned on. It was really important to us to try to investigate. This wasn't a typical antagonist-protagonist relationship. They could be friends, they could be mentors, they could be mother-daughter. It could be so many different things all at once; I didn't just have to be a villain the whole time. There was many, many different layers to this relationship all at once.

WandaVision's reveal about Agatha's true identity also coincided with her confirmation that Wanda was the mythic "Scarlet Witch" a witch whose power "exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme." After finally embracing this power, Wanda punished Agatha by trapping her in the Agnes persona she adopted while living incognito in Westview, New Jersey. On whether Agatha might return for future Phase 4 MCU stories, Comicbook.com reported that Hahn "would be willing to come back," stating "there's so many aspects of her that I think are fascinating. She touches in so many different worlds throughout the comics."

Wanda will return in the MCU film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, whose title alludes to Phase 4's exploration of the superhero multiverse. This concept was canonically established in Loki's season finale, with Loki's female Variant Sylvie unleashing the multiverse by killing He Who Remains, despite his warning that doing so would unleash countless evil Variants of himself. Marvel's What If...? animated series has also provided a window into alternate MCU timelines, such as Peggy Carter taking the super-soldier serum or T'Challa becoming Star-Lord.

Created by Jac Schaeffer, all nine episodes of the widely-successful WandaVision are available for streaming now on Disney+.
