For years, the adaptation of Y: The Last Man was in developmental hell, leaving fans of the Vertigo series certain that whether it be a movie or television series, the story wouldn't come to life. Thankfully, the first trailer from FX on Hulu has dropped to tease the action, drama and politics to come, so let's break down key moments from the clip.
We see Diane Lane's Jennifer Brown at the Pentagon with the first victim of this virus that wipes out all males across the planet being the U.S. President. In the comics, Brown was a Congresswoman and it seems like the President bleeding out and dying will be what results in her taking over as Commander-in-Chief -- something not in the source material.
What makes the shot even more chilling are the scenes of men dying all across the world, causing vehicular accidents and plane crashes, leading to a post-apocalyptic landscape.
Jen's daughter, Hero (Olivia Thirlby), is also spotted with her paramedic boyfriend who dies as the pandemic begins. This follows the comics to a tee, indicating that the show will be mimicking Brian K. Vaughn's direction with this being the moment that fractured Hero mentally and turned her down a dark PTSD-filled path. It'd result in her seeking out her family, while battling the rage and depression within.
There's the iconic shot of Yorick (Ben Schnetzer), Hero's brother and Jen's son, in his signature coat and gas mask in a deserted New York. It once more evokes the comics, painting a deserted landscape where Yorick has to hide out as he's scared that authorities, as well as angry women, come hunting to figure out why he's the lone male who didn't die.
This is one of the most popular shots in the trailer, as Ampersand, the little capuchin monkey, is revealed amid dead bodies on the street. In the books, the monkey is Yorick's companion and had a connection to the pandemic but not much is revealed as to what role Ampersand will play here. Seems he'll be important to Yorick -- not just as the only other surviving male in the world, but as his best friend being carried in a cage.
We see civil war brewing with scavengers holding people at gunpoint in robberies, pointing towards rebellious women such as the Amazons existing. In addition to extremists in these abandoned cities, Jen has to worry about the state of the world with many people going poor and hungry. Amber Tamblyn's Kimberly Cunningham is also found challenging her, hinting that it'll be nasty politics and power struggles amongst the surviving females to shape a new world without chaos.
Agent 355 (Ashley Romans) is spotted on the case, desperate to figure out what caused men to die out. She doesn't seem convinced that a military state is the way to go, and she's found fighting other rebels, blowing up places and investigating. It hints at the spy game from the Y: The Last Man books which involved world powers such as Israel, China and Russia getting involved in what could be political cover-ups and chemical warfare. She's seen protecting Yorick as well, which hints that she may be sent by Jen as the world crumbles to recover him to solve the puzzle.
The most important human -- besides Yorick and Agent 355 -- is found at the 1:07 mark in the trailer with Diana Bang's Dr. Allison Mann calling him "reproductively interesting." It's the only shot of her in the trailer but fans would know she's the scientist who's hellbent on unlocking Yorick's secrets and why he was able to survive the extinction. She'd end up being part of 355's mission as well, and with many people coming after Yorick, it's evident they'll be after Allison's findings too in order to rebuild the planet their way.
Y: The Last Man's first two episodes premiere Sept. 13 on FX on Hulu, with the first season spanning 10 episodes in total.
