5 Hot-Tempered Anime Heroes (& 5 Who Keep Their Cool) | CBR

Protagonists and heroes in the realm of anime vary greatly, even if they are often cut from the same cloth. Most anime heroes, main or supporting, are brave, kind, selfless, and determined, and they may have all sorts of goals, weapons, and powers at their disposal. Some heroes charge recklessly toward a challenge, while others keep their cool.

It's almost a trope that shonen heroes, in particular, are loud, juvenile hotheads who exasperate their allies and impress their enemies with their brash and headstrong attitudes. Some characters are indeed like that, but plenty of anime heroes know how to stay cool and assess the situation before making a calculated move.

10 HOT-TEMPERED: Naruto Uzumaki Is Known For Being Hyperactive (Naruto)

Gradually, over time, Naruto Uzumaki learned to think things through and have the patience to practice advanced techniques, such as Sage Mode. As a whole, though, Naruto is famed for his hotheaded temper and reckless ways in battle, which amused and exasperated Kakashi Hatake during Team 7's early days.

Naruto is eager to prove himself worthy of becoming Hokage, and patience was never his strong suit. He's easy to rile up with insults or taunts, and if a friend is in peril, such as Gaara of the Sand, Naruto will charge right in, regardless of the consequences.

9 COOL-HEADED: Soma Yukihira Accepts Challenges With Grace & Cheer (Food Wars!)

Even if Soma Yukihira is eccentric and goofy at times, he is a serious chef who aims for the top of the culinary world. Soma, as a true shonen hero, is a brave and confident person who will gladly accept any challenge, but he's not a total hothead about it.

Soma is actually among the most relaxed characters, unlike the competitive Takumi Aldini and the fierce Ryo Kurokiba. Soma loves to compete, but he also thinks things through carefully, and he isn't easily angered with taunts or insults. He takes everything in stride.

8 HOT-TEMPERED: Misaki Ayuzawa Is A Fierce Student Council President (Maid-Sama!)

Shojo heroines vary as widely as shonen heroes do, and some of them are quite ferocious, but they also have their kind and friendly side to balance things out. That's the case for Misaki Ayuzawa, the hot-tempered but responsible president of Seika's student council.

Misaki is patient and generous when it comes to her friends and allies, and she is tough and unrelenting against her rivals and opponents, usually delinquents who break the rules. Misaki is easily riled up and takes everything as a challenge, for better or for worse. No one can get a rise out of her like the "pervy alien" Takumi Usui.

7 COOL-HEADED: Jotaro Kujo Keeps His Wits About Him (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Unlike his goofy and brash grandfather, Joseph, the teen shonen hero Jotaro Kujo seems to pride himself in his cool, aloof exterior. He has little patience for games or nonsense, not even from his own family. Unfortunately, this makes him rather prickly and difficult to approach at times.

On the plus side, Jotaro is a smart and mature fellow for his age, and he isn't easily angered or frightened in battle, though things got quite personal between him and DIO. Jotaro can keep his cool in battle and outsmart his enemies time after time, leading to some truly impressive victories.

6 HOT-TEMPERED: Katsuki Bakugo Is Explosive In More Ways Than One (My Hero Academia)

No modern anime hero is more notoriously hotheaded than Katsuki Bakugo, who tried to call himself King Explosion Murder as a pro hero. Bakugo's Quirk, Explosion, perfectly matches his equally explosive temper, and everyone in class 1-A knows it.

Bakugo is a smart kid who can think things through, but that doesn't stop him from being excessively competitive and confrontational, and he can be downright petty about it. Slowly, though, he is making his rivalry with Izuku healthier and more constructive, a much-needed change for the better.

5 COOL-HEADED: Tohru Honda Is Patient & Kind (Fruits Basket)

The sweet, gentle Tohru Honda is a classic shojo heroine who has a heart of gold and, when the situation calls for it, nerves of steel. Tohru has always been a compassionate and upbeat person, learning many lessons from her ex-delinquent mother, Kyoko. Not even Kyoko's tragic death broke Tohru's spirits.

Tohru can befriend just about anyone, and she will patiently help a friend process their emotional and personal baggage so they can become their best selves. No matter the challenge, Tohru will persist, and when it comes to Akito's tantrums, Tohru isn't about to fight fire with fire. She responds with kindness.

4 HOT-TEMPERED: Edward Elric Is Short But Furious (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Edward Elric is a real handful. He may be a talented and smart state alchemist, but he is also noted for his very short temper, insecurity about his height, competitive nature, and his difficulty in expressing his romantic interest toward Winry Rockbell. He is the very image of an angsty, moody teenager.

Edward is quick to snap if anyone even vaguely comments on his short stature, and he can't stand having people look down on him or patronize him. He's also liable to throw a tantrum if anyone tries to outshine him or mock him, and he's not afraid to get into a shouting match. He's not a bully, though. He is also a kind and generous person who is fiercely determined to defend the innocent.

3 COOL-HEADED: Chad Uses His Strength For Defense (Bleach)

Ichigo Kurosaki has his personal faults, such as his punkish behavior and surprisingly short temper, and even his bookish friend Uryu Ishida is known for getting easily riled up and snapping at people. Then there's Chad, who is cool as a cucumber. Nothing can rattle him.

Chad is a mature, dignified, and kind boy who has sworn to use his strong body to defend others, not to harm them, and he has endless patience. No one can get to him with taunts or insults, but he is also stubbornly determined to fight even if he is outmatched, such as when he faced Captain Shunsui Kyoraku or Nnoitora Gilga. He's a bit reckless, but not hotheaded about it.

2 HOT-TEMPERED: Avatar Korra Is A Ferocious Waterbender (The Legend Of Korra)

Avatar Korra is the successor to Aang, and as a person, she couldn't be more different. Korra is a native Waterbender, but she has the fierce temper of a Firebender and the stubbornness of an Earthbender. She matured a bit as the series went on, but her hot temper was never totally extinguished.

Korra is the type to charge into the fray and get things done, no matter the consequences, and she always believes that actions speak louder than words, even though she values diplomacy, too. Korra makes as many messes as she cleans up, and she often butts heads with everyone, from Tenzin to Mako to Lin Beifong and beyond.

1 COOL-HEADED: Ken Kaneki Wants To Reconcile Ghouls & Humans (Tokyo Ghoul)

The bookish Ken Kaneki had his life changed forever when he became a half-ghoul, and he tried to bring peace to both humans and ghouls by being a man torn between two worlds. He can relate to both ghouls and humans, and he fights not out of hunger or pride but for the dream of uniting all the people.

Ken is a brave and tenacious fighter, of course, but he isn't easily riled up, and he sometimes tries to win a fight without drawing blood, such as during his first clash with Kotaro Amon. Ken is always the type to think things through, and he's perfectly willing to retreat if he must.
