Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith Series Loses Star Over Creative Differences

Amazon's Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot series needs a new co-lead, now that Phoebe Waller-Bridge has exited the show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge departed the show over "amicable" creative differences with its star and co-creator Donald Glover. The latter remains attached to executive produce and headline the series, with Francesca Sloane (Fargo) acting as co-creator, showrunner and an executive producer as part of the deal she signed with Amazon in 2020.

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith series re-imagines the 2005 movie of the same name, in which Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play a married couple who discover they're both secretly assassins working for rival organizations. It would have marked a reunion for Glover and Waller-Bridge after the duo played a young Lando Calrissian and his droid companion L3-37 in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story. Despite their differing artistic visions for the show, insider sources for The Hollywood Reporter say the pair remain friends.

Both Glover and Waller-Bridge have deals to develop other projects for Amazon. For now, though, Glover is focusing on finishing post-production on the third season of his critically acclaimed FX comedy/drama series Atlanta and preparing to begin production on Mr. and Mrs. Smith in early 2022. Waller-Bridge is equally busy at the moment, between serving as a producer on the last season of Killing Eve, which she created, and playing a lead in the currently filming Indiana Jones 5. She also co-wrote the James Bond movie No Time to Die, which will finally reach theaters this fall.

On top of the aforementioned series, it's speculated Glover will reprise his Solo role for the Lando show that Dear White People creator Justin Simien is developing for Disney+. Disney announced the project at its Investor Day event in December 2020, describing it as a limited series. Beyond that, however, details are under-wraps for the time being, including whether it centers on Glover as the younger Lando or Billy Dee Williams as the older version of the character, or perhaps uses flashbacks that will allow both actors to return as the suave con artist-turned Rebel Alliance hero.

Either way, Glover will be back on the small screen when Atlanta Season 3 premieres in the first half of 2022. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also remains on-track to arrive that year, even after Waller-Bridge's departure.
