Covenant Webtoon Creator's Harley & Ivy 'Butch-verse' Fan Art Goes Viral

The artist behind the popular Webtoon series Covenant went viral thanks to unique fanart interpretations of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

LySandra Vuong, who goes by the handle @explodikid on Twitter, originally tweeted butch versions of Harley and Ivy in August, commenting that the designs were inspired by the Harley Quinn animated series. Both pieces of art soon went viral, racking up thousands of retweets and tens of thousands of likes. Vuong later produced a promotional poster-style image dubbed "Into the Butch-verse," as well as another illustration showcasing the duo in action with guns blazing and plant tendrils unfurling. While the first two images started the trend, there is currently even more fan art on Vuong's profile.

Vuong's art has inspired a flurry of other fan pieces in the weeks since, including artwork from Twitter user @denimcatfish showing Harley and Ivy embracing each other and alternate designs reminiscent of the pair's look in Batman: The Animated Series by @claudcarts. Other art included ideas of what the Joker might look like in the Butch-verse by artist Miguel Sanchez, cosplay by Tayla Sturrock and high praise from comic book artist Babs Tarr (Batgirl, Moto Crush). Tarr called the pieces "AMAZING" and later posted her own artwork of an intimate Harley and Ivy on her Patreon.

Covenant, Vuong's Webtoons series, recently hit 50 episodes. Starring an exorcist named Ezra who has to protect a seemingly normal human named Sunny while grappling with his own disbelief in God, Covenant currently has more than 344,200 subscribers on Webtoons. Vuong has described the series as a "queer supernatural action comic" taking place in a world "where priests are decked out in holy tattoos and brandish machine guns in the face of demons."

This "Butch-verse" fan art was inspired by HBO Max's Harley Quinn animated series, which saw Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) running away together after Harley crashed Ivy's wedding in the Season 2 finale. DC Comics is releasing a six-issue comic series titled Harley Quinn: The Animated Series - The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour, which will serve as a tie-in between Seasons 2 and 3 and will follow the new couple on the road trip of a lifetime. Season 3 does not yet have a release date but is set to premiere on HBO Max either late this year or early next year.
