Cowboy Bebop Star John Cho Reacts to His Hair Trending on Twitter

John Cho revealed what is was like to see his hair trending on Twitter when the first look at Netflix's Cowboy Bebop arrived.

Before the first official images from the live-action Cowboy Bebop series arrived, fans got an early taste of how Cho's Spike Spiegel would appear thanks to a promo that dropped in June. Cho's Spike hair quickly went viral, with many fans overjoyed with his long locks. But at first, the actor didn't believe it was real.

"People were texting me, 'FYI, your hair is trending on Twitter.' I did think it was a joke," Cho told Entertainment Weekly. "After multiple texts, I looked and literally it was trending on Twitter. I couldn't believe it. I have no idea how to feel about it."

Cho has mostly sported short hair, but when it came time to play the iconic anime character, he wanted to embody Spike's look as much as possible. And for the actor, a wig was never an option.

"I just really disliked the idea of a wig. Have you ever worn one? I'm just so aware of wigs," Cho revealed. "I said, 'I really want it to be my own hair.' It was a kind of a struggle to grow it out. It went through some really awkward phases."

"I definitely watched him have to tie it back and try to figure out how to manage it before we got him back in the chair," Cowboy Bebop showrunner André Nemec added.

Cho spoke earlier this month about what the process was like for growing out his hair and why he ultimately landed on the look he has for the show -- even if it's not 100% anime accurate.

"I don’t know if I like the hair. My hair’s such a mess, and it’s very hard to make it do anything," Cho said. "My discussions with hair and makeup were, 'We could do this exact version that would match the anime, but I want him to look like this is natural' and 'He just washes his face and goes.' And 'I don’t want to wear a wig' — I didn’t want to [do action scenes] while having my scalp pulled. And so I had to try and make my hair grow as fast as possible before episode one."

Cowboy Bebop, and John Cho's hair, arrives Nov. 19 on Netflix.
