DC: 10 Heroes Who Had To Kill Their Friends In The Comics | CBR

When it comes to being a hero in DC Comics, there are a lot of hard choices to be made. Every day in Gotham, Batman makes calls that change the lives of any number of of the city's residents. The same is true of Superman in Metropolis and literally any other hero in their city or on their planet.

But sometimes those decisions become incredibly personal. Heroes occasionally have to make choices that cost the lives of those dearest and nearest to them. Even worse, those same heroes actually end up taking the lives of their own friends in order to to save the world. Hopefully, it was all worth it in the end.

10 Batman And Superman Kill Green Arrow

In an alternate reality, Superman and Batman had gone to the dark side. This put them at odds with many of their old friends. And to the shock of no one, Green Arrow was more than happy to stand up to both of them.

At the same time, it also wasn't surprising that Green Arrow lost that fight miserably. First, Batman kicked his butt. Then, Superman popped up and finished the job with his heat vision. Shockingly, his boxing glove arrow wasn't of much use.

9 Ozymandias Kills The Comedian

At the core of Watchmen was a brilliant and Machiavellian plan. It essentially involved manipulating the rest of the world into cooperating with each other by killing a lot of people in a fake alien attack.

This strategy was conceived and almost perfectly executed by Ozymandias, the self-described smartest man on the planet. But his masterful plan was almost undone by the Comedian. As such, Ozymandias took care of him rather savagely before he could say anything.

8 Shazam's Brutal Death At The Hands Of Superman

The world of Injustice is filled with a lot of absolutely savage superhero deaths. It's also evidence of what can happen when Superman goes completely off the deep end. Simply put, he starts stacking bodies like firewood.

Shazam might have gotten the worst of it. Superman quite literally killed him by burning Shazam's eyes out with his heat vision. It was an incredibly brutal way for the young hero to go out.

7 Hal Jordan Wastes Guy Gardner

Calling Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner friends might be a bit of a stretch, particularly in the early stages of their relationship. But they actually managed to find some common ground over the years and work together to save the universe on a few occasions.

But in the world of Injustice, their relationship had a much more devastating conclusion. Hal quite literally tore Guy's arm off and let him fall to his death. This was not likely how Guy Gardner saw his time as a hero coming to an end.

6 Damian Wayne Murders Nightwing

Throughout the course of his training, Damian Wayne had a variety of mentors. It all started with Talia al Ghul and Ra's al Ghul, his mother and grandfather respectively. Once he started living with Batman, the entire extended Bat-family played a role in s development.

Nightwing had an odd relationship with him. And in the Injustice universe, that ended with Damian killing him. He struck Nightwing in the head. When he hit the ground, he ended up breaking his neck. This was a rather ignominious way for such a prominent hero to go out.

5 Superman Slaughters Black Canary

The Injustice comics have been filled with an impressive array of utterly savage hero murders, a significant portion of which were committed by Superman. When he crossed that line, he was all in on being the bad guy and racked up an insane body count.

Unfortunately for Black Canary, she ended up on that list. Superman took her out with a heat vision blast to the gut. To make matters worse, she was pregnant with Green Arrow's child at the time.

4 Doctor Manhattan Explodes Rorschach

The way Doctor Manhattan sees time and space, it's hard to tell if he actually considers anyone a friend or an enemy. Given his power levels, it's irrelevant to him whether people like him. He just hangs out on Mars with no pants on, literally doing whatever he wants.

That being said, there was a time that Doctor Manhattan considered Rorschach an ally if not an actual friend. That fell apart rather quickly and Manhattan blew Rorschach up with a proverbial snap of his fingers.

3 Superman Beats Green Arrow To Death

Sometimes in the reality of the Injustice comics, Superman got creative when killing his friends and allies. He was especially artistic with the use of his heat vision, something Black Canary and Shazam found out first hand.

But in the case of Green Arrow, Superman went old school and just punched him a lot. To be fair, he really only needed to hit the Emerald Archer once. But as was often the case with Injustice Superman, he liked to make a point on bloody fashion.

2 Hal Jordan Murders The Green Lantern Corps

When Mongul attacked Earth and killed everyone in Coast City, Hal Jordan didn't handle the situation particularly well. His grief was easy to understand given that this was his hometown and millions of people were killed.

What was less understandable was the fact that Hal snapped when the Guardians refused to help him fix things. He ended up killing the rest of the Green Lantern Corps to steal their power. This included all of his long-time friends and allies, such as Kilowog.

1 Oliver Queen Kills Hal Jordan

After Hal Jordan turned evil, he used the power of the Green Lantern Corps he stole in an attempt to rewrite reality. This was all part of his plan to resurrect the residents of Coast City and fix what the Guardians wouldn't.

But quite unexpectedly, Oliver Queen was the one who stepped up to stop Hal's plans. A well-placed, well-timed arrow killed the former Green Lantern. This utterly devastated Oliver as he and Hal had been exceptionally close friends for a very long time.
