DC: 9 Recent Characters Who Were Killed Almost Immediately | CBR

Breaking into the comics scene is hard enough for writers, pencilers, and colorists. Success is a brass ring that only a few will grasp. Appearing as a guest contributor or even becoming part of the team on a long-running title is not a guarantee of a long career. The same can be said for new superhero teams and new characters.

New characters struggle to make a first and lasting impression. Some, like Harley Quinn, Ghost-Maker, and Spoiler, have been able to stay relevant and even star in their own comics. But for every new hero or villain that makes their first appearance, there is always the chance that a premiere is merely the prelude to a finale.

9 Green Lantern Guardian Was Murdered By An Assassin

Green Lantern #1 introduced a new role for the Green Lantern Corps. They joined the United Planets under the leadership of John Stewart. They were voted in by a majority of the United Planets with the understanding that the Green Lanterns were no longer the unaccountable police force patrolling the galaxy. But the ceremony following the induction of the Corps was marred by tragedy.

After repelling an attack by magic users from Zerox, it appeared the culprits were stopped. But they were only the first attack on the Green Lanterns. The magic users sought to awaken an ancient magic. But a second attack targeted the ancient guardians. Koyos was killed by a powerful blast from an unknown origin. His ceremony was presided over by the Guardians who talked of their transition from the living plane that is called Tolk.

8 Scale Of The Revolutionaries Killed By The Shark

Tom Taylor launched a new run of the Suicide Squad by making some major changes. It started with a group of rebels who call themselves The Revolutionaries. They are all powered individuals striking out at the corruption that disrupted their lives.

Unfortunately, their actions brought the interest of Amanda Waller and the new person in charge, Lok. During an intercept mission, the squad took down members of The Revolutionaries starting with amphibious brothers Scale and Fin. Scale was caught between the jaws of The Shark. Even after Fin begged for the life of his brother, The Shark showed no mercy and eviscerated the body of Scale.

7 Magpie Is Killed By Tthylacine

Magpie was captured and imprisoned at Belle Reve after a failed career as a thief in Gotham. She was forced to join a Task Force X that is not run by Amanda Waller. Magpie is not nearly as successful as Catwoman and not as street-tough.

The Suicide Squad intercepts The Revolutionaries and Magpie was sent in by Lok replacement and was discovered by Thylacine. Thylacine is a hunter with enhanced senses that she used to ambush Magpie in the dark. Magpie's death was sudden and painful. Waller accused Lok of wasting valuable resources and a grievous misuse of personnel. But her death was just one of many.

6 Cavalier Loses His Head To Osita

Cavalier is a swashbuckler who takes on the French swordsman role and dress code seriously. His addition to the Suicide Squad raised questions from long-time members like Deadshot. Cavalier acts like a pompous brigand. But the tables turn when Cavalier’s rapier is blunted by the fists of Osita, the leader of The Revolutionaries.

The first punch by Osita breaks Cavalier’s nose. He has enough time to complain that his nose is broken and then Osita throws a second punch. Cavalier’s head disintegrates like a watermelon crushed by Gallagher’s mallet. Thus ends the brief career of Cavalier.

5 T.N.Teen Of The Revolutionaries Suicide Squad #1 Is Killed By Lok

T.N.Teen is a living weapon. He is a human bomb that can control explosions and detonate. Then he reforms and prepares for the next energy release. When The Revolutionaries are captured by the Suicide Squad they refuse to surrender.

Lok threatens to kill members of the team using the explosives that were implanted using Deadshot’s non-lethal ammo until they agree to join Task Force X. The continued refusal leads Waller to make an example of T.N.Teen. She triggers the explosive implanted with the non-lethal bullet. It is T.N.Teen's death that leads Osita to make the command decision to stand down.

4 The Shark In Suicide #3 Is Killed By Fin

The Shark wasn’t just following Lok's orders when he killed Scale. The Shark enjoyed killing Scale and proceeds to mock Fin. In issue #3, The Shark accesses the link Fin once had with his brother and telepathically shares the joy The Shark experienced killing Scale.

However that all falls apart when characters see through the veil of reality that obscures Fuginaut from the view of most mortals. The man first known as Teth-Adam crashes into the Rock of Eternity and reality is sent tumbling into uncertainty.

Harper was dealing with the consequences of his addiction, his struggle with substances, and the challenges of being a father and a costumed crimefighter. During his stay, Harper and other residents of Sanctuary were slaughtered by Wally West who suffered a powerful explosion through the Speed Force that resulted from the evil plot of a terrible enemy.

Superboy-Prime was the big bad of the Infinite Crisis series in 2006. A survivor of Crisis On Infinite Earths, the Superboy of his Earth and the Superman and Lois of another Earth joined Alexander Luthor in “paradise” before choosing to return. He arrived following the events of Identity Criss and Brother Eye with a plan to save everyone.

Superboy-Prime killed heroes before he was finally stopped and was believed dead. Instead, he reappears in Dark Nights: Death Metal: The Secret Origin from writers Geoff Johns and Scott Snyder. He is immediately hated and reviled. But, when given the chance to redeem himself Superboy-Prime makes the ultimate sacrifice and turns the tide of the war against The One Who Laughs.
