Digimon Adventure 2020 Introduces Archvillain Negamon | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 64 of Digimon Adventure 2020, "The Angels' Determination," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

As Digimon Adventure 2020 hurtles towards the end of its current -- and final -- arc, late-stage power-ups, wildly strong adversaries and huge revelations abound in Episode 64, "The Angels' Determination." Chief among those is the latter detail, with the series' lurking Big Bad finally having a Digimon name put to its fearsome reputation as the "Great Catastrophe."

Following the Chosen Ones figuring out the true meaning of their individual crests, the group quickly reunites in the episode at Wisemon's tree, inside which floating tablets inscribed with each crest's symbol have been under attack. This time, the Soundbirdmon that Tai and Koshiro came across during Koshiro's Crest of Knowledge quest -- and former agents of Devimon -- surround the tree, letting loose "madness calls" across the Digital World. Aiming to destroy the tablets as the pink menace that was Burpmon once tried to do, hundreds if not thousands of Soundbirdmon club together to become Deathmon, which blasts a hole right through the sacred trunk.

Luckily, WarGreymon, HolyAngemon and Angewomon defend the naturally-formed fortress from being obliterated entirely, and the threat rallies Kari and Takeru to push their respective Holy Digimon to the Mega level for the second time, though into different forms: Orphanimon and Seraphimon. While the pair are able to destroy Deathmon, the damage is already done. The Demon Lord is described ominously as only being the "first cry of the catastrophe," and, as this happens, in an undisclosed location, a giant Digitama (Digi Egg) watched over by Algomon suddenly cracks and hatches, giving birth to Negamon -- the 'Final Boss' of Digimon Adventure 2020.

Being a brand new character, very little is known about Negamon so far. A pixelated avatar of the Digimon was released via a special Digivice toy in November 2020. Following that, the clearest look at the creature we got before the anime was in last month's edition of V Jump magazine, which also revealed Negamon's name for the first time. Looking like a combination of Marvel's Venom and an Eldritch horror, Negamon's threat level is further increased by a vision Takeru and Patamon have at the start of Episode 64, in which Devimon -- the ever-present devil on Angemon's shoulder -- warns that in Negamon's wake, all will be gone, even despair, leaving just a white void behind where there was once a vibrant and lively world of sentient data.

There's nothing quite like a former villain warning you just how bad the next one is to really put things into horrifying perspective. The DigiDestined are about to enter into not only the fight of their lives but of the entire Digital World's, with an evil more insidious than Devimon and more apocalyptic than Milleniumon poised to wipe out all of existence.
