Digimon Ghost Game Comes to Crunchyroll With New Trailer | CBR

Digimon Ghost Game will stream internationally on Crunchyroll.

The anime streamer announced the latest title to join their fall lineup on the company's official YouTube channel. Crunchyroll previously simulcast the rebooted Digimon Adventure anime, which recently came to a conclusion, and will continue to broadcast the franchise's latest iteration, Ghost Game, after it debuts in Japan on Oct. 3. The new trailer mostly uses footage that was seen in a previous preview for the series, but it does also offer a few new quick glimpses at the show's supporting cast, including the series' new heroine Ruri Tsukiyono, and its third new Digimon tamer, Kiyoshirō Higashimitarai.

The new show will join other anime such as The Faraway Paladin and Season 3 of World Trigger as a part of Crunchyroll's fall season.

Ghost Game will star a new cast of characters separate from Digimon Adventure, and will tell the story of Hiro, a middle school student enrolled in Hazakura Academy boarding school. The new protagonist will be voiced by Mutsumi Tamura, who franchise fans may recognize as the voice of Koizumi "Izzy" Izumi from Digimon Adventure. Hiro will be partnered with Gammamon, a new Digimon that will be voiced by veteran voice actor Miyuki Sawashiro, who has previously lent her talents to anime such as Durarara!! and Sword Art Online, and who also filled the role of the femme-fatale Fujiko Mine in some of the more recent entries in the Lupin the Third franchise.

The Digimon franchise began with the release of Bandia's Digimon virtual pet toy in 1997, which was followed up by the release of the original Digimon Adventure anime in 1999. The anime told the story of a group of children who were mysteriously teleported into the digital world that exists unseen alongside the real world, and was one of the first examples of the now extremely popular isekai anime genre to be broadcast on TV outside of Japan.

The anime series was also one of the first anime productions to be directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who has since helmed acclaimed anime movies such as Summer Wars and the Academy Award nominated Mirai. Hosoda's latest film, Belle, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to an overwhelmingly positive response. The movie debuted in Japan over the summer and is currently the third highest grossing movie of the year in the region, topped only by the latest Detective Conan movie and the finale to the Evangelion series.
