WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange #1, available now from Marvel Comics.
Doctor Strange's time has finally run out. The much anticipated The Death of Doctor Strange has finally arrived, but not all of his villains are elated about the Sorcerer Supreme's demise. In fact, one of Doctor Strange's worst enemies, Baron Mordo, has stepped up to help get to the bottom of the crime, if only so he vsn take revenge for having the murder he wanted to have commit stolen out from under him.
What would have been an otherwise ordinary evening for Doctor Strange takes a devastating turn when someone comes knocking on the front door of his Sanctum Sanctorum late at night. Despite all of his mystic defenses, there was nothing the Sorcerer Supreme could do to save himself from this tragic fate. The moment that his life is lost is felt around the world by fellow mages and others attuned to the supernatural, and his closest allies quickly gather in his home to make the gruesome discovery. It isn't just those who genuinely cared for Stephen Strange who have come together, though, as Mordo turns up to seek justice in the pages of The Death of Doctor Strange #1 by Jed MacKay, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela, and VC's Cory Petit.
First introduced in "Face-to-Face with the Magic of Baron Mordo!" by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko from 1963's Strange Tales #111, Karl Mordo was a Transylvanian Baron left disillusioned by the state his homeland was left in following World War One. Looking to return his country to its former glory, Mordo turned to the dark arts in order to do just that and even began an apprenticeship under the Ancient One at a young age. After learning of the existence of Dormammu, Mordo summoned the demon against the wishes of the Ancient One, forcing Doctor Strange to intervene and become Mordo's sworn enemy in the process.
Over the years, Baron Mordo has tormented Doctor Strange as much out of pure spite as for the furthering of his own ill-gotten glory, even relatively recently, though he has never been able to truly best his rival. Now that someone else has taken Doctor Strange's life, Mordo's burning hatred has been reignited with a new focus to whoever committed the crime and kill them for it.
It's understandable that Wong is violently untrusting of Baron Mordo, even if it is clear that he wasn't the culprit. As unlikely as it might be that the villain would lend a hand to the investigation, he could be one of the greatest assets available. Between his own long, personal history with Doctor Strange as well as his connections to the supernatural underworld, Baron Mordo stands to be an important part of solving the puzzle at hand. With any luck, he won't kill any of the heroes he is supposed to be working with along the way.
