Doom Patrol continues to stack its roster of lesser-known DC Comics characters with the introduction of the villain Garguax.
During a preview of upcoming Fall shows, Entertainment Weekly spotlighted Doom Patrol's eclectic roster of obscure bad guys, with Garguax (Stephen Murphy) as a prime example. Showrunner Jeremy Carver gave an overview of the character's backstory in the show, saying, "He was quite the fearful presence back in the '50s, but since then he's been living a very different existence. Will he continue to be loyal to an evil leader, or will he be loyal to himself? It's not unlike the Doom Patrol questioning where they stand in the aftermath of their own tragedy." A photo included with the article sees Garguax casually hanging out in a sauna with Cliff Steele/Robotman (Brendan Fraser & Riley Shanahan).
Garguax made his comic book debut in 1964 as an alien warlord armed with advanced technology, who sought to conquer Earth. He teamed up with the Brotherhood of Evil, eventually betraying his fellow villains and causing them to team up with the Doom Patrol to stop his efforts. The character was eventually killed off as part of the Invasion! storyline in 1989 and hasn't been seen or mentioned much since.
Garguax isn't the only classic Doom Patrol baddie to join the show in Season 3. The teaser trailer for the series' return introduced viewers to his fellow Brotherhood members the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. Additionally, another longtime Brotherhood member will be a main character in the show's third season: Madame Rouge, played by Michelle Gomez. The character may not be a straightforward villain though, as she seeks the Patrol's help in stopping the strange and sinister Sisterhood of Dada.
Season 3 of Doom Patrol premieres Sept. 23 on HBO Max.
