How Shang-Chi's Post-Credits Scene Sets Up a Sequel | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, now in theaters.

As with virtually every Marvel Cinematic Universe film that came before it, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings includes a post-credits scene that offers a button to the main story and teases a direction for the property within the shared universe. In the case of Shang-Chi, the post-credits scene isn't a humorous coda, but instead something that deeply impacts the hero's personal life and future.

Played by Simu Liu, Shang-Chi is revealed to have a younger sister named Xialing (Meng'er Zhang), with whom he is estranged after abandoning her for years to escape from their villainous father Wenwu (Tony Leung). In the interim, Xialing similarly escaped Wenwu and set herself up as a major figure in the Macau underworld, owning and operating a nightclub that stages illicit street fights, with patrons gambling vast sums on the outcomes. After reuniting Xialing is reunited with her brother and drawn back into Wenwu's world, Shang-Chi believes she will dismantle their father's empire, the Ten Rings, upon Wenwu's death and face off against a monster from the multiverse attempting to invade the MCU. However, Shang-Chi's post-credits scene proves that isn't the case.

At the Ten Rings headquarters in China, Xialing has not disbanded the criminal organization that secretly steered the course of history for centuries. Instead, it's clear she has set out to rebuild the Ten Rings, with a new generation of warriors training at the heart of the compound. And as Xialing sits upon her father's former throne, she begins taking meetings with other powerful figures in the MCU's criminal underworld, ready to lead the Ten Rings in a new direction, with Shang-Chi unaware of her plans.

Shang-Chi had spent the bulk of his life, and the film, trying to reject his father's legacy, with no interest in inheriting the Ten Rings. That ultimately led to father and son coming to blows in the fantasy world of Ta Lo before Wenwu was killed by invading monsters from the unexplored multiverse. Moving forward, Shang-Chi learning that Xialing has expanded the Ten Rings beyond their father's legacy may similarly lead to a confrontation between the two siblings.

More than just with his father, Shang-Chi has always had a complicated dynamic with his family, and one that has caused a significant amount of resentment between the hero and his sister. By contrast, Xialing has always followed more in their father's footsteps, evidenced by carving out her own illicit enterprise in Macau in a few short years.

With Wenwu effectively off the board and Shang-Chi left in the dark, and with bigger responsibilities to contemplate, Xialing has taken on her own destiny, with an even greater position of power in the MCU. And when Shang-Chi inevitably reunites with his sister once more, he might not like what he sees.

To see how this post-credits scene sets up the siblings' future, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
