How to Make a Web-Shooter That Works | CBR

Spider-Man fans across the globe spent their childhoods pretending to shoot webs from their wrists. Now, however, they can do it for real: YouTuber Sean’s Crafts has come up with an accessible means of creating a web-shooter from home, with the primary ingredient being cardboard.

Sean’s Crafts has an entire playlist dedicated to the subject. Every fan, no matter how tech-savvy, can easily craft a web shooter based on their favorite version of Spider-Man. Styles of craftable web-shooters include the ones from Marvel's Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Amazing Spider-Man, among others. Most of the materials needed to design these web-shooters can be found in the recycling bin.

Sean’s Crafts makes it clear that having proper springs and magnets are vital for web-shooter construction. If the spring is not strong enough, the web-shooter will not have the optimum range. The YouTuber also provides free, downloadable templates that have been pre-labeled by the creator.

He makes the base by cutting out cardboard multiple times and layering it with superglue, using a piece from his template. By layering the cardboard, the web shooter becomes substantial. This is what separates Sean’s Crafts from other DIY web shooters -- it looks weighty and professional. After the base is completed, he rolls a strip of paper into a small barrel, uses Super Glue to bind the tube together, and adds cardboard to the end of the barrel.

Finally, Sean's Craft attaches the tube to the shooter’s base and spray paints the entire mechanism black. He creates the locking device out of Popsicle sticks, by cutting apart three small pieces of the wood and attaching two pieces to form an L shape. He then takes all three pieces and connects them with duct tape. This gives the prop flexible movement, allowing it to actually shoot the webs. After creating the bullet for the web shooter, he modifies a sewing needle to create a hook. After this hook is attached, the web string can be looped onto it. His detachable web cartridge is made from cardboard, as well.

Peter’s web-shooter in Spider-Man: Homecoming is very much understated. Sean’s Craft uses thin, transparent wire to achieve this same effect. Once the silver stripes have been applied, fishing line is attached with a small loop for his finger. When he pulls on that wire, the webs are fired. He recommends using dental floss for the webs themselves.

To make a functioning web-shooter inspired by Spider-Man: Far From Home, one will need:

  • One 0.6x6x50mm steel compression spring
  • Two 5x1mm neodymium magnets
  • A tube of superglue
  • Jumbo Popsicle sticks and bamboo sticks
  • Black and silver spray paint
  • A roll of duct tape
  • Dental floss
  • A sewing needle and a spool of thread
  • Thumbtacks
  • Wire cutters
  • A spool of fishing line
  • Rubber bands
  • Velcro
  • A craft knife and replacement knife blades
  • A cutting mat

The finished product looks authentic and professional. It can also be reloaded easily with fairly inexpensive material. Not only can fans create perhaps the most iconic Spider-Man tool of all time, but they can also do it almost entirely with materials found around the house thanks to this Sean's Crafts DIY.
