There's a lot of pressure on the young cast of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, and Dallas Liu is certainly feeling it as he prepares to play Zuko.
"Because it is such a beloved show, I feel like there is some pressure to do a great job," Liu ComicBook.com while promoting his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. "And not that I'm doubting anyone or the project at all, but this is the biggest project and the biggest role that I've been able to take part in now, especially leading with a character like Zuko, who's so complex and one of, if not the favorite, one of the favorites of the show with his fire bending and his history. I mean, he's such an incredible character and he has one of my favorite character developments in all of the animated series."
"I'm just as much of a fan of Zuko as everyone else is," Liu continued. "So I mean, obviously, I'm excited because this is like a dream. But at the same time, it gets a little nerve-wracking, you know? To do a good job, and I mean, at the end of the day, I can only do what I'm capable of, but I hope that people enjoy my performance."
Liu made a splash as Maya's brother on the hit Hulu comedy PEN15, but his small role in Marvel's Shang-Chi has marked the beginning of his rise to greater heights. His Avatar: The Last Airbender casting will offer him his biggest -- and most scrutinized -- role yet, as the actor alludes to. But for Liu, he's just excited to join a universe he's loved since childhood.
"I was just asking people if you had four options, which one would you bend? Then I would determine whether I thought they were cool enough to hang out with," Liu said.
Little is known about how Netflix's take on the beloved animated series will recreate the familiar show while presumably adding new elements. Plenty of fans are worried, however, given the exit of original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko over creative differences. Regardless of how the show is received, Liu seems ready to make Zuko fans proud.
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender doesn't yet have a release date.
