Marvel's Strongest Avenger Was Confirmed When Wanda Destroyed Thanos' Sword

It's becoming more and more clear that Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is definitively the strongest Avenger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other characters have suggested it -- some of them impressed, others wary -- and she herself has proved it through her actions, particularly when she destroyed Thanos' sword in Avengers: Endgame.

Played by Elizabeth Olsen, Wanda was introduced in Age of Ultron as a character powerful enough to manipulate the minds of the Avengers, from fully human Tony Stark to nigh-immortal Thor. She could read minds and sense intentions, manipulate matter and explode a legion of Ultron drones with a blast of energy. In Captain America: Civil War, she was obviously trying not to rely upon her mental-manipulation skills, but she still displayed impressive telekinetic abilities by launching men into the air or through floors of a building. Some critics complained her powers seemed toned down compared to the comic book source material, but they could see her potential.

In Infinity War, Wanda held her own in fights against Thanos' children, the Black Order, then stood toe-to-toe with the Mad Titan himself. Not only was she able to hold him off for longer than any other MCU hero, she did so while also using her powers to destroy the Mind Stone, at Vision's behest. She was able to accomplish two impressive -- and, no doubt, exhausting -- feats at once, while also witnessing the traumatic death of her true love. If Thanos hadn't already possessed the Time Stone, Wanda likely could have put a stop to his plan. Unfortunately, he did have it, so he was able to rewind time and seize the Mind Stone, but she came very close to foiling his scheme.

When everyone was brought back in Endgame, Wanda was quick to go after Thanos, full of vengeful fury. She successfully took him on and even shattered his sword. This weapon, which may have been made of Dargonite, was powerful enough to fend off both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker -- both made of Uru, metal forged in the heart of a dying star -- and broke Captain America's Vibranium shield. Dargonite is likely the strongest metal in the MCU, although it hasn't been officially explained, so Wanda's ability to obliterate it with minimal effort further proves she's the strongest Avenger.

WandaVision depicts Wanda using her powers in new and extreme ways. At the beginning of the Disney+ series, Wanda created an entire alternate reality inside of a New Jersey town, along with a version of Vision, and then created twin sons. She also started to learn about the full extent of her powers. Because of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) taking her on a mental journey, Wanda realized the Mind Stone wasn't responsible for giving her powers; rather it awakened latent abilities that were always within her. She was finally dubbed the Scarlet Witch, and at the series' close, she was seen studying Chaos Magic to try to figure out what that really means.

Agatha also stated the Scarlet Witch is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme, which means Wanda's upcoming appearance in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness will be especially interesting. She's presumably going to help him fight mystical foes while showing off her powers. With her studying so intently at the end of WandaVision, it seems likely she'll have even more new tricks up her sleeve. While Wanda was already the most powerful Avenger in the MCU, it seems her power will only continue to grow from here on out.
