No Time to Die Final Trailer Breakdown & Analysis | CBR

The final trailer for No Time to Die has finally been released. After several delays related to both creative changes and the COVID-19 pandemic, the 25th James Bond film will finally be releasing internationally on September 30, 2021. The movie's marketing department has had a difficult task in putting together enough trailers to keep the public interested while also not giving away too many plot details, and the third and final international trailer contains several intriguing new tidbits.

Let's break down the highlights and biggest questions from the final international trailer for No Time to Die.

The trailer opens with a conversation between James Bond and his nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Blofeld is Bond's adoptive brother and the leader of the criminal organization Spectre, who was captured by MI6 at the end of the series' previous installment, Spectre (2015).

Other trailers for No Time to Die previously revealed that Bond will visit Blofeld while in MI6's custody, but the final trailer reveals a bit more of their topic of conversation. After remarking that fate has drawn them back together, Blofeld comments that they have the same enemy - Safin. This lends credence to the theories that Safin has a history with Spectre, and he may now be out to destroy what's left of them.

After Bond and Blofeld's conversation, the trailer shows CIA agent Felix Leiter traveling to Jamaica to visit James while he is retired. Leiter tells him that as time has gone on, it has gotten more difficult to tell good from bad, heroes from villains. This seems to be a reference to how Daniel Craig's Bond has proven to be much more willing to do morally questionable things than previous incarnations of the character. The quote also ties into what seems to be one of No Time to Die's main themes: James Bond not knowing who to trust.

Building off of this last moment, the trailer pivots to focus on the relationship between Bond and his love interest, Dr. Madeleine Swann. Blofeld's voice is heard telling James that Madeleine still loves him, implying that something has happened to fracture their relationship between the events of Spectre and this film. Eve Moneypenny then asks Bond if Madeleine is "one of them," suggesting that she may have ties to the movie's villains.

The film's other trailers have previously hinted at a mystery revolving around Madeleine, but this trailer comes the closest to spelling it out. The U.S. version of the trailer goes even a step further, with the mysterious Safin seemingly hinting that he is (or used to be) in love with her. Combined with the fact that Madeleine is the daughter of former Spectre lieutenant Mr. White, there certainly are a lot of possibilities as to how exactly Madeleine's mysterious backstory will tie into No Time to Die.

Previous trailers have shown glimpses of an action scene happening aboard a massive cargo ship, and the final trailer reveals that James Bond will find himself trapped aboard the vessel as an explosion causes it to sink. Bond is shown struggling to stay above water as a plane flies away from the doomed ship. Instead of some over-the-top deathtrap, Bond will be taking on the sea itself in what is sure to be a heart-pounding action sequence.

The trailer reveals a lot more about Safin's base of operations. When Bond and Nomi arrive aboard their stealth plane, the structure of the base is shown to be tilted heavily in one direction, suggesting that Safin may be operating out of a collapsed building. Bond and Nomi then walk past tanks full of water that appear to be full of a dark liquid that Safin is testing.

Interestingly, there are two screens mounted over the tanks that display Safin's cracked Noh mask. This seems to confirm that the event in which his mask broke, which has been glimpsed in previous trailers and has also been hinted to involve Madeleine Swann, was a defining moment in his life. Most Bond villains have some sort of iconic symbol or item, such as Blofeld's white cat or Oddjob's hat, and it appears that Safin's will be his Noh mask.

The latter half of the trailer devotes a bit more time to Nomi, the new 007. Bond and CIA agent Paloma are shown on a mission that is interrupted by Nomi, who uses a harness to escape with a man holding a briefcase. Bond then describes her as a "disarming young woman," suggesting that the man she got away with was someone Bond wanted information out of. This seems to confirm that Bond and Nomi will start the film as rivals before eventually working together to take down Safin.

To see Daniel Craig's final performance as James Bond, watch No Time to Die in theaters on Oct. 8.
