Peacemaker Teases Vigilante's Comics-Accurate Helmet | CBR

HBO Max's latest promo nearly revealed a comic-accurate helmet for Vigilante in Peacemaker.

Fans were given their first glimpse of the character less than two-weeks ago, in a photo released by Entertainment Weekly. The image showed John Cena as Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker, sitting beside Vigilante (Freddie Stroma). The picture, however, only reveals the upper-region of the Vigilante suit, with the helmet nowhere in sight... until now (kind of).

There is a moment in HBO Max's line-up teaser that shows Peacemaker firing a shotgun for target practice. One eagle-eyed fan screenshotted the moment to find Vigilante standing next to him, firing a shotgun of his own and nearly giving viewers a look at his comic-accurate helmet. When the fan asked showrunner James Gunn, "Is that Vigilante?" Gunn responded with, "Justice cannot be fully revealed."

Gunn also included hashtags for the two, Peacemaker and Vigilante, adding on "#BFFs" at the end of his tweet. Whether this was intended as sincerity or sarcasm is unclear. After all, Peacemaker was previously seen having a confrontational relationship with another DC Comics character in Gunn's The Suicide Squad, the film released in Aug. 2021 that the series will be spinning out of.

In the film, Peacemaker and fellow Squad member Bloodsport (Idris Elba) appeared to be constantly at each others' throats--quite literally, in one instance. There was even an entire scene in the film to showcase a rivalry between the two, as they tried to get more kills than the other. Peacemaker is not seen as a team player much in that movie, wanting to kill King Shark at one moment and fighting with Rick Flag another, so fans will have to wait and see how him having to work with another gun-toting, vengeance-seeking individual will play out on screen.

The last time DC fans saw a live-action adaptation of Vigilante was in The CW's television series, Arrow. The character first appeared in Star City within the show's fifth season, and would later be killed off in the following season. Season 5 featured a misdirect with another character using a Vigilante's name, Adrian Chase, though he was revealed to be the season's big bad, Prometheus, instead.

Peacemaker will see Adrian Chase as his true comic book persona, the Vigilante, when the series releases. The series stars Cena, Stroma, Steve Agee (John Economos from The Suicide Squad), Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt from The Suicide Squad), Chukwudi Iwuji (Murn) and Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo). The series is set to release in Jan. 2022.
