Shang-Chi: Ben Kingsley Based Trevor Off Some Real-Life Colleagues

In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Sir Ben Kingsley reprises his Iron Man 3 role as Trevor Slattery. As it turns out, Kingsley based his performance off of colleagues from the early days of his career.

During a press conference attended by CBR, Kingsley recalled that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige personally approached him with the role of Slattery for Iron Man 3 at his home in England. For Kingsley, the idea of his role being the sinister facade of the Mandarin and the bumbling Slattery, all within the same character, was intriguing. In order to develop his performance as Slattery, Kingsley looked to figures he encountered in his real-life for inspiration.

"I did base him on one or two colleagues that I have worked with very early on in my career and one director I worked with as well," Kingsley shared, with identifying his specific points of reference. "He's a composite of several people that I have met along the way and to whom I'm eternally grateful because they were good to me."

Last seen in the 2014 Marvel One-Shot short film "All Hail the King," the fate of Slattery and his public masquerade as the Mandarin is revealed, at least in regards to how the villainous Wenwu reacts to his legacy being appropriated. Having attracted Wenwu's attention, Slattery learns the consequences of his obliviousness firsthand.

Directed and co-written by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
