Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will showcase the Abomination in a pivotal action set piece. Audiences got a glimpse at the reasoning behind it thanks to one of the film's producers.
Discussing the unexpected return of the largely forgotten Marvel Cinematic Universe villain, Producer Jonathan Schwartz told ComicBook.com that there are two main reasons why the creative team behind the film decided to bring back Emil Blonsky, who was last seen in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. He claimed, "It seemed to make the most story sense for where we're going to find him in this universe, and also, just be a cool, awesome fight."
Schwartz went on to add, "It was a good time to refresh Abomination's look. We haven't seen him for a while, so I think everyone was excited to kind of see him at all in weird glory." The character has been absent from the franchise for over a decade. This echoes director Destin Daniel Cretton's position on Abomination's new appearance, as he previously stated, "I think Abomination got a bit of an upgrade… or we might call it an evolution going through time. I do really love the design that we landed on for that character."
The Hulk villain is one of many storytelling elements tying Shang-Chi to the greater MCU, with the latest trailer further highlighting the connective tissue. As if that weren't enough, Simu Liu also seemed to teased audiences recently with a potential future crossover with Anthony Mackie's Captain America.
Beyond Shang-Chi, Incredible Hulk actor Tim Roth is set to reprise his role as the gamma-powered monster in the forthcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk, which will also feature an appearance from Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner. Details concerning his role in She-Hulk's story have not been revealed.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Daniel Callaham. The film is set to arrive exclusively in theaters on Sept. 3.
