Shang-Chi Producer Explains How Marvel Assembled Its Post-Credits Cast

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ring's first post-credits scene features several familiar faces from prior Marvel Cinematic Universe adventures. According to the film's producer, deciding who would actually show up in that sequence was a lengthy process.

"We wanted to give the audience an indication that Shang-Chi is part of this bigger thing now," producer Jonathan Schwartz explained to Marvel.com. "That was the goal, and then it came down to who are the right characters to put Shang-Chi in touch with to say, 'Yes he's one of them, he's part of this thing.'"

"It was a conversation between me, and [director] Destin Daniel Cretton, and [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige of who's right?" Schwartz continued. "Who would be doing the scene? Who feels right from a character standpoint, and for what the ongoing stories are in the MCU? That's how we ended up with Wong, and Bruce, and Carol taking us through what they know about the rings and welcoming Shang-Chi into the bigger universe."

Beyond several Avengers' cameos in Shang-Chi's post-credit scene, the film also includes the return of a notable villain. As revealed in the movie's marketing material, Abomination, sporting a more comic-accurate design, can be seen fighting Wong during the film's fight club scene. That particular set piece also includes the return of Helen, a Black Widow agent first seen in Black Widow.

It's unknown where Shang-Chi and his colleagues will next show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, if the box office is any indication, those characters will return to the franchise sooner rather than later. In its opening weekend, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings broke box office records for a Labor Day release and scored the second-biggest domestic debut of 2021. It's also currently the most popular film in the MCU, sporting a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 98%, handily beating every other Marvel film and series.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now playing in theaters.
